  • Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 56 mins)
    • By Novella Carpenter
    • Narrated By Karen White
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Novella Carpenter loves cities - the culture, the crowds, the energy. At the same time, she can't shake the fact that she is the daughter of two back-to-the-land hippies who taught her to love nature and eat vegetables. Ambivalent about repeating her parents' disastrous mistakes, yet drawn to the idea of backyard self-sufficiency, Carpenter decided that it might be possible to have it both ways.

Sarah says: "Not an instruction book but a fun read"
    "What a pleasure!"

I enjoyed both the book and the reader very much. It was like a combination of The Omnivore's Dilemma and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Mineral. The author perfectly captures the somewhat obsessive nature of a dyed-in-the-wool gardener, while always wryly aware of how crazy some of her behavior appears to others. Lovely!

  • Defending Jacob: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 25 mins)
    • By William Landay
    • Narrated By Grover Gardner
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Andy Barber has been an assistant district attorney in his suburban Massachusetts county for more than 20 years. He is respected in his community, tenacious in the courtroom, and happy at home with his wife, Laurie, and son, Jacob. But when a shocking crime shatters their New England town, Andy is blindsided by what happens next: his 14-year-old son is charged with the murder of a fellow student.

Kelli N. Perkins says: "Still Thinking About This Tale Weeks After"
    "Gripping AND thought provoking"

Grabbed me from the opening, and had me totally involved til the end (and even after!) Deals with dilemmas that all of us face every day, though they are here heightened to their ultimate levels. Who are we most responsible to? How do we show our love and support to our children? All this wrapped up in amazing court room drama, AND read by one of the best...a must listen!

My only quibble is that the author's last twist may have been one too many. Regardless, I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a summer listen with some meat.

  • Elegance of the Hedgehog

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Muriel Barbery
    • Narrated By Barbara Rosenblat, Cassandra Morris

An enchanting New York Times and international best seller and award-winner about life, art, literature, philosophy, culture, class, privilege, and power, seen through the eyes of a 54-year-old French concierge and a precocious but troubled 12-year-old girl.

    Pyles says: "It surprised me"
    "Good reader, not much there"

I kept waiting for something or someone in this book to engage me -- it never happened. Great vocabulary, though!

  • The Devil You Know

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 48 mins)
    • By Mike Carey
    • Narrated By Michael Kramer
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Felix Castor used to cast out demons for a living, and London was his stomping ground. But in a time when the supernatural realm is in upheaval and spilling over into the mundane world of the living, his skills are in renewed demand. With old debts to pay, Castor is left with no choice but to accept one final, well-paying assignment: a seemingly simple exorcism.

    Jessica says: "wonderful story"
    "Good book, awesome reader"

A dark, supernatural mystery with flashes of humor. Should appeal to anyone who likes the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris.

  • The Head Trip: Adventures on the Wheel of Consciousness

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 37 mins)
    • By Jeff Warren
    • Narrated By Raymond Todd

Few of us realize how many states of consciousness we pass through on a regular basis. In this entertaining guide, Jeff Warren explores 12 distinct, natural states we can experience in a 24-hour day, each offering its own kind of knowledge, insight, and adventure.

Donald says: "Reader apparently had somewhere to be"
    "Slowed it down"

Although the content is good, I was having a problem with the high speed reading. Using the -1 setting on my iriver solved the problem and I enjoyed this very much. A nice update on what has been going in studies on consciousness. I was particularly interested to hear about the new, more sophisticated methods of biofeedback.

  • Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life

    • ABRIDGED (6 hrs and 51 mins)
    • By Byron Katie, Stephen Mitchell
    • Narrated By Byron Katie, Stephen Mitchell

Out of nowhere, like a fresh breeze in a marketplace crowded with advice on what to believe, comes Byron Katie and what she calls "The Work". In the midst of a normal life, Katie became increasingly depressed. Then one morning, she woke up in a state of absolute joy, filled with the realization of how her own suffering had ended. The freedom of that realization has never left her, and now, in Loving What Is, you can discover the same freedom through The Work.

    Heather says: "simply amazing"
    "Finally, self help that helped!"

This is listening at its best. Hearing the voices of those that Katy is guiding through the questions change from immense pain and sadness to laughter and playfullness was so powerful that I have listened to this over and over during the past few weeks. Their stories and the work they did were deeply touching and helped me to get through some issues that had been very difficult for me. Thank you Katie and Audible!
