For a curious boy like Jess Hall, growing up in Marshall means trouble when your mother catches you spying on grown-ups. Adventurous and precocious, Jess is enormously protective of his older brother, Christopher, a mute whom everyone calls Stump. Though their mother has warned them not to snoop, Stump can't help sneaking a look at something he's not supposed to - an act that will have catastrophic repercussions, shattering both his world and Jess's. It's a wrenching event that thrusts Jess into an adulthood for which he's not prepared.

Where does A Land More Kind Than Home rank among all the audiobooks you???ve listened to so far?

At first I wasn't too sure about it-took a little while to get into the story but when I did it was well worth it. Find myself sitting in the car as long as I can to listen.

In this intense, fascinating story, Burke follows the lives of three young Louisiana men, each of whom finds himself in desperate circumstances. There's Avery Broussard, the last survivor of a family of once-prosperous land owners, who has a weakness for alcohol; J.P. Winfield, a poor singer and guitar player who rises to fame as a country music star, only to be destroyed by drug addiction; and Toussaint Boudreaux, a black longshoreman who moonlights as a heavyweight boxer.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If this was James Lee Burke's first book it's a wonder he wrote more. Nothing at like his later books. Very seldom do I not finish a book, but I could only get through half of this one before I gave up.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Since there was no distinction between the characters voices, there was a lot of "Avery said" "Billy Joe said" - very annoying

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

A recovering alcoholic on the run from his past, all Billy Smith wants is to be left alone. But commanded by the voices in his head to commit acts of violence he does not understand, he kidnaps a prostitute known only as Angel and heads north to a bucolic little New England town called White Falls. Something monstrous has taken root in White Falls, and has waited centuries for the right time to awaken. Psyches begin to unravel and violence erupts. The fate of the living ultimately rests on the back of one man. For the dead are watching....

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Felt like th story was being told by the evening newscaster. Very seldom do I not finish a book-this one was an exception.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

When Time and Again was published in 1970, The New York Times hailed it as "a fanciful novel that beautifully blends science fiction, nostalgia, and mystery." Millions of fans agreed, making the book a modern classic. Travel with author Jack Finney back to an incredible world where there are no such things as automobiles, airplanes, computers or television...back to January 1882.

William R. Creech says: "Good historical fiction"

I was a little skeptical when I ordered this book, I can't stand sci-fi time travel stuff. But the story is great. It doesn't dwell on the time travel aspect, but tells a wonderful story of life in the past decade.

Divorced from his own wife and carrying on halfheartedly with another man's, saddled with a bum knee and friends who make enemies redundant, Sully now has one new problem to cope with: a long-estranged son who is in imminent danger of following in his father's footsteps. With its sly and uproarious humor and a heart that embraces humanity's follies as well as its triumphs, Nobody's Fool is storytelling at its most generous.
