Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

What did you love best about The Glass Castle?

What a great story, there were times where I could hardly believe this was a true story. I'm going to have my daugther read it when she gets older and recommend it to others. It's uplifting that Jeannette Walls came from poverty, moved through life so positively and was determined to make a good life for herself. It could have been so easy to follow in her parents footsteps or into a life of drug abuse. I highly recommend this book and believe it should be required reading in high school.
