I could only listen to the first 3 chapters of this book before I deleted it. The behavior of the main characters was incredibly rude, sexist, and ultra-frat-boy. Their emotional development must have been arrested sometime during high school. In fact, they were so obnoxious it made me hope that bad things WOULD happen to them.
I also found the decisions made by the main character were totally unbelievable for a young man whose accomplishments were so outstanding he was selected among thousands to work for a Supreme Court Justice.
I'm willing to overlook a lot of inconsistencies in a suspense book, but The Tenth Justice went way past my tolerance level.
Judging by the rating this book's narrator has received, I seem to be pretty much alone with the difficulty I experienced. My problem was that much of the time when the movie director was speaking, I would picture Sherlock in my mind. The narrator did not seem to be able to create a significant difference in their voices.
I read a lot of mysteries containing explicit violence. But there is a point at which mutilations and killings become too gruesome and take up so much of the book that skipping over the extreme violence leaves you with hardly anything to read. I suspect that publishers require their authors to top the level of "gruesomeness" in each new book. That is regrettable.
I doubt I'm alone in my growing avoidance of books like "Killing the Shadow". Only so much prolonged, repetitive, excruciatingly graphic and detailed descriptions of mutilations/murders can be tolerated. I only wish there was a violence rating scale so that I didn't accidentally buy books like this one.
I really enjoyed the first half of this book. The quirky, humorous main characters, 2 cousins, were very enjoyable. Unfortunately, about halfway through, the personalities of these 2 women completely changed. I hoped it was just a plot twist. But unfortunately it wasn't. Inexplicably the 2 feisty women suddenly became passive, clueless, and uninteresting.
