Why we think it’s a great listen: The most celebrated performance in all of Audible’s history, The Help has nearly 2,000 5-star reviews from your fellow listeners. We hear the print book’s not bad, either. In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women - mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends - view one another.

I do not normally write reviews, but this book is a must. I went through the gamut of emotions, literally sobbing at some points. Not only out of sadness but happiness too. Just not long enough. I could have listened for 50 more hours.

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

I really enjoyed this book, and I got it because of all the positive reviews. My only problem is, why must the reader be subjected to the authors political views? That was the only thing that turned me off. I found myself tuning out at certain points, and then getting back into it when he stuck to the relationships and characters. I think you can write a book like this without adding all your own political views. I would have rated this 5 stars if not for that!

In a historic farmhouse outside Boston, seventy-year-old Percy Darling is settling happily into retirement; his grandson, Robert, has long assumed he will follow in the footsteps of his mother, a prominent physician; Ira, a gay teacher at the preschool in Percy's barn, and Celestino, a Guatemalan gardener who works for Percy’s neighbor, each one striving to overcome a sense of personal exile. Choices made by all four men, collide forcefully on one lovely spring evening, upending everyone’s lives, but none more radically than Percy’s.

Jon says: "Great performance, great writing, wonderful story"
    "Agenda??"
    Overall

I was looking for entertainment. I got it and a whole lot more. Too Bad that I had to hear every potlical view from the author, from evolution to carbon emissions. It was a nice story, but the author could have left out all her views. I found myself grunting every time she spewed her intellectual liberal theories. By the way, I wonder if Julia Glass has made any money off her books? The capitalist pig! UGH

But when Caelum and Maureen flee to an illusion of safety on the Quirk family's Connecticut farm, they discover that the effects of chaos are not easily put right.

It was long at times, but I love long books. By the time it was over, I was a blubbering idiot, and not in a super sad way, but in a great way.
    I love Wally Lamb!

This heart-stirring tale of a young slave girl, torn between her love for a handsome aristocrat and her faith in God, transcends genres with its awe-inspiring power and emotional intensity.

    Overall

This is an amazing story. But it also is changing me. I am a Christian, but I am learning so much about my life and myself listening to it.
You will not be disappointed. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.
