"This book will give you nightmares," cautions The New York Times. Richard Preston takes us inside the ongoing war against bioterrorism, investigating the anthrax attacks of October 2001 and the potential for a future bio-attack using smallpox or, worse yet, a new superpox virus resistant to all vaccines. "As exciting as the best thrillers, yet scarier by far, for Preston's pages deal with clear, present and very real dangers," says Publishers Weekly.

colleen says: "Interesting and eye opening"
    "super terrifying"
    Overall

wow. dont start this before bed... not only will this book put the absolute fear of bioterror in you, but it is difficult to put down. far more sinister than any fiction, this book weaves the history of smallpox, anthrax, and 9/11. i'm a physician and had little education on smallpox, a simply horrific disease. bottom line, the averaqe american lives in ignorant bliss... and i'm not a fear mongering conservative.

boy this book is bad. simplistic one dimensional characters, silly story, and nowhere near as good as da vinci code. this seems like one of those novels that only come out after the author has "made it," when in reality it is an amateur first effort that was not published for a good reason. want a good listen? try Demon in the Freezer...

One of this country's leading political satirists dangles before us a tantalizing novel whose protagonist has a great deal in common with a recent First Lady. Beth MacIntyre, First Lady of the United States, has been charged with the murder of her husband, a Presidential Lothario of the first water. She is accused of throwing a historic Paul Revere spittoon during a bedroom spat, putting an unfortunately fatal dent in the President's lust-filled head.

a little slow to start, but witty and fun. excellent satire of politics and media.

George Smiley, one of the most brilliant spies in the world, is chosen to dig out a mole and destroy him. And so Smiley embarks on his blind night walk, retracing path after path into his own past - its aliases, covers, sleights of hand - burrowing into the dust of unresolved episodes.

Valerie G. Olson says: "Wonderful story that exercises the intellect"
    "not hard to follow"
    Overall

i did not find this book hard to follow. the smiley character is always a few steps ahead of whats actually being revealed - the ideas are coursing thru his head... later they are assimilated and its the revelation, and the mastery of detail required to reach that relevation, that makes this such a fine read. complex yes, boring no. maybe a little difficult in the beginning because you have no idea of the history of initial characters. overall, a rather faultless book. it will stand the test of time and is certainly at the top of the espionage canon. highly recommended

Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. The crime was never resolved, and the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.

    "Average"
    Overall

Not Forsyth's best, and ultimately an average piece of fiction. The plot and charcaters are adequate, but Forsyth covers up lack of depth with excessive detail. The putting together of the operation is a bit tedious and long. Yet, it kept me listening... Odessa File and Avenger are better.

George W. Bush arrived in the White House an untested governor with an unfortunate habit of tripping over his own tongue, presiding over an economy slipping into recession, and a nation more obsessed with reality television than with the reality of international terrorism. He was considered by many opinion-leaders a dupe, an illiterate, a cowboy, a preppie, a child of privilege. Now, it is clear to John Podhoretz that Bush has become, and will be remembered, as one of this nation's strongest leaders.

    Danioton says: "Well written, excellent"

the author needs to get his facts straight. this book was written by a bush believer and apologist with clear right wing agenda. this is not NONFICTION. if you are a fear mongering right wing blowhard, you will surely love this book.

  • A Short History of Nearly Everything

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Corby says: "Very informative, fun to listen to"
    "FANTASTIC"
    Overall

Outstanding, enjoyable, fun, stimulating, and educational. This is a must read for anyone interested in science and reality. Bryson gives thumbnail sketch of how we know what we know, and the progression of science thru the ages. Thankfully, he does not address faith and creationism. Instead he delves into major advances in science and the characters that made them. A thouroughly enjoyable listen. A+ highly recommended.
