Loved it! I was hesitant to buy it as it sounded so far afield of what I usually like. But wow! My husband who prides himself on not reading fiction was so engrossed in it that he was consistently late to work sitting in the car once he arrived in the mornings. Best book I've gotten from audible. A must read!
Characters are not well developed and there is absolutely no resolution. It was frustrating to have so many loose ends and no attempt to answer any of the reader's questions. It was just OVER. And now I am OVER Grisham.
I am so taken with this book that I have been reading it for months. I go back and "reread" sections just to re-enjoy the beautiful writing and incredible reading. Fictional with a fascinating historical relevance and a real insight into the current issues going on in the Congo right now. Great characters, colorful writing, great narrator. Love it!
Although the narrator did a hero's job of trying to make this book enjoyable, it is just so darned far-fetched as to make you shake your head. I found myself talking to myself saying "Oh, boy...yeah, sure!" The main character is supposed to be this capable, dynamic police detective but we don't see any of those qualities in her. In fact, if she wasn't such a spineless wimp there would be no story here. She makes more boneheaded decisions than I could swallow. If you don't mind if your fiction is totally unrealistic, and your supposed-heroine is really not very sympathetic or likeable perhaps this won't bother you, but it got in the way of me enjoying any part of this book.
This is the first book by DeMille that I have "read" and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although this was a bit outside my usual genre, the character of John Corey, as well as the "fiction based on reality" plot was highly addictive. Many times I find conversation phoney in books and it's hard to suspend your disbelief to get caught up in the action, but the conversation of every character was highly believable, colorful and often funny which you can credit to the author as well as the narrator. Excellent read, although I was personally a bit disappointed in the last 15 minutes. Perhaps I was just disappointed that it had to end at all! Great suspense, fascinating topic. Move over, Kate ... I developed a crush on John, too. Will definitely read DeMille's other novels with this character.
I downloaded this book because I so enjoyed The Alienist, and thought it sounded like a similar theme....a mystery with a historical setting. Agree with the reviewer who said a lot of "blah blah" and not much action. Good reader, but slow moving with lots of stilted and proper conversation in between. Get out your dictionary because there are words here that haven't been spoken aloud for 200 years.
Great love story that just has an all-around beautiful tone to it. Touching and thoroughly engrossing once you get past the potentially confusing time/date format. From the beginning it was the beautiful writing that kept me listening and how glad I am. You get to know these people, bumps and all, and appreciate the depth and "realness" of their relationship. Read wonderfully and a real treat. Most people might want to have some tissues close by. I am on my second listening and enjoying it even more this time!
I ordered this book rather hesitantly...not sure I could really get into the wandering narrative. Boy, was I delightfully surprised! If you are looking for a book that is an all-out "whodunnit" you will probably be disappointed. But the colorful historical details are fascinating and so well read. Delightful side trips about New York restaurants, architecture and politics at the turn of the century. I always have a problem with unrealistic conversation in books, but this one was engrossing and believeable. Well written, delightfully read and a real treat. I'm sorry it's over!
