Beneath Helen’s beautiful façade, Alistair finds a courageous and sensual woman. A woman who doesn’t back away from his surliness—or his scars. But just as he begins to believe in true love, Helen’s secret past threatens to tear them apart. Now both Beast and Beauty must fight for the one thing neither believed they could ever find—a happy ever after.

The story was nicely paced and the plot was believable. The inner conflict of the characters was expressed very well and both characters were worth cheering for. The resolution came at just the right time...something that seems to be a struggle for many authors. I loved this story!

Best-selling author Madeline Hunter stokes the fires with this sinfully delicious tale of an unjustly imprisoned woman and her savior. When publisher Phaedra Blair is released from confinement, she has Lord Elliot Rothwell to thank. But she soon learns Rothwell's ulterior motive - to prevent her from publishing a manuscript that would scandalize his family. Yet Phaedra doesn't mind playing Rothwell's erotic games - and she is every bit his match.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narration is cold and haughty. It's difficult to distinguish the characters from the aloofness and unemotional tone of the narration. Mostly I feel like the characters are unlikable.

Would you recommend Lessons of Desire to your friends? Why or why not?

No. I will finish it because I paid for it, but I mostly use the book to fall asleep. Sounds rude, but it is absolutely true.

What didn’t you like about Jill Tanner’s performance?

She is emotionless. Her narration causes the characters to come off as emotionless and unlikable. I cannot cheer for them or even like them. They seem to have no pathos.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No. I don't care about the objectives of the characters. The seduction scenes are so cold that I cannot believe that anything meaningful exists between the characters other than calculated manipulation.

    Any additional comments?

I will not take another chance on this author or narrator because I cannot tell if the problem is with one, the other, or both.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The narrator is excellent, the plot is engaging, the character development brings the story to life and the romantic relationship is engaging and sweet.

What did you like best about this story?

The voices and the plot. I was engaged the whole time.

What does Cynthia Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Voices with real personality and distinction. Excellent accents (except for the German one, maybe).

    Any additional comments?

The sex scene was terribly disappointing. I think the author should either skip sex scenes or make them enticing. Painful virginal sex with minimal foreplay is not what women want to read!!

Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

Would you listen to The Swerve again? Why?

Yes, and I will. His thoughts are complex but one can follow.

What other book might you compare The Swerve to and why?

I really don't think there is a comparable book....perhaps Haidt.

    Which scene was your favorite?

There are not scenes in this book, really.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. It's a little dense for one sitting, but I would gladly listen to it repeatedly.

    Any additional comments?

More from Greenblatt. Students and scholars benefit greatly from his writings!

Lady Philippa Marbury is...odd. The brilliant, bespectacled daughter of a double marquess cares more for books than balls, for science than the season, and for laboratories than love. She's looking forward to marrying her simple fiancé and living out her days quietly with her dogs and her scientific experiments. But before that, Pippa has two weeks to experience all the rest - 14 days to research the exciting parts of life. It's not much time, and to do it right she needs a guide familiar with London's darker corners.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the book, but I hoped for more. It was pleasant, so I would say time well spent

What did you like best about this story?

    The narrator is consistently excellent.

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favorite?

Her male voices, in general are always very good.

Was One Good Earl Deserves a Lover worth the listening time?

It was worth the time, but I feel that the author missed the mark, a little.

    Any additional comments?

The "imperfect fingers" thing was meant to be endearing but was kind of wierd. The six years of celibacy was far-fetched. I didn't really buy it. Maybe if it had been explained better. It was a sexy book, but I think that Digger's motives were shaky. I didn't really believe that character. Also, I am always a little frustrated when characters don't simply talk about what sorts of conflicts are happening. I realize that the point is to create conflict, but it feels pretty convoluted sometimes. This was a decent book, though. I don't regret buying it, I just think it could have been executed better.

What did you love best about Taming an Impossible Rogue?

The characters were likable and realistic. FINALLY, an author who knows how to create characters with flaws but who are also successfully redeemed. The conflict was not forced or artificial in this novel. WELL DONE!!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Taming an Impossible Rogue?

The heroine's meeting with her family showed the male lead's support but not RESCUE. Excellently handled.

What does Anne Flosnik bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

If you could sum up The Many Sins of Lord Cameron in three words, what would they be?

    Outstanding book series!

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Many Sins of Lord Cameron?

Every moment of angst and uncertainty rang true with both leads, but especially Lord Cameron.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I am reviewing this book to far out to recall a particular scene, but I remember that Lord Cameron was distinctl different than his brother, Ian, and that the intensity of the family's love for one another, and for their mates was consistent and compelling.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I don't really laugh or cry at books as a rule, but I felt myself rooting for the characters in a big way and wanting the best for them!

The whole series is one of the best I've encountered!!!

The fiction of Bonnie Jo Campbell has been honored with the Pushcart Prize, the AWP Award for Short Fiction, and Southern Review’s Eudora Welty Prize. In this stunning collection—a National Book Award finalist—Campbell’s rural Michigan characters are both as jagged as rusty metal and as delicate as the light brush of fading dreams.

What did you love best about American Salvage?

It's literary merit. These stories are not obvious in their intent and meaning. Take the time to consider what the author is saying about struggle, worth, beauty, life, and the short distance between characters who seem very different on the surface

What other book might you compare American Salvage to and why?

I think this book is quite unique, but I guess the closest would be collection of short stories edited by Rushdie. I think it was published in 2005 or 2006.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

The style was colloquial, matter of fact, and well-suited to the writing.

Who was the most memorable character of American Salvage and why?

    The Trespasser!

    Any additional comments?

Excellent choice for college students and professors!!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No. The plot was short on action and the characters were not compelling.

What was most disappointing about Hannah Howell’s story?

While I can appreciate the author's attempt to stretch some romance genre conventions, the manipulative heroine as romantic agressor, long-un-requited love, and truly idiotic male character lead made for a bit of mess. I think the author was too ambitious in terms of trying to break new ground. Any one of the aforementioned elements might have been tolerable, but all of them together was a bit of a disaster.

Have you listened to any of Angela Dawe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Angela Dawe is consistently great. Her voices are top notch - distinct and interesting.

Was Highland Vow worth the listening time?

No. I couldn't finish the last few hours

    Any additional comments?

Authors need to be careful about the risks they take. Take them, yes! But not in huge chunks within one text. PLEASE! Especially in the case of the male lead, when you make a male OVERLY weak, it is very, very difficult, if not impossible to grow him the heck up by the novel's end!!!!

What would have made The Blue Falcon better?

An adult style of writing, or at least an honest categorization as a children's novel!!!! Also, the narration was consistent with fairy tale style fiction!

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am considering cancelling my membership. I certainly won't be buying any more extra credits. I have hit a SERIOUS dry spell!!!

Would you be willing to try another one of Nicola Barber’s performances?

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
