When Henry receives a letter from an elderly taxidermist, it poses a puzzle that he cannot resist. As he is pulled further into the world of this strange and calculating man, Henry becomes increasingly involved with the lives of a donkey and a howler monkey named Beatrice and Virgil and the epic journey they undertake together.

"IF YOU LOVE PI - DON'T LISTEN"
    Overall

I had high expectations for this book. I am a big fan of Life of Pi. This book is a HUGE disappointment! It is a dark, depressing, sick book with no redeeming qualities. I kept listening, hoping it would get better. It never did.

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.

Pamela says: "The circus of your dreams"

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator was tiresome. There were many characters, but little difference between the voices. The narrator was also over-dramatic, breathless and borint.

Would you ever listen to anything by Erin Morgenstern again?

    Doubtful

What three words best describe Jim Dale???s voice?

    Breathless, boring, unimaginative

Do you think The Night Circus needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    No

    Any additional comments?

THe book promised a lot, but delivered little. It has much pretense of dark, star crossed lovers. However, the relationship is not well developed and becomes tedious. Most of the other characters are just there to populate the story, and are not compelling in themselves. Although it deals with magic, it has little excitement. It labors on to create a plot line that should be wonderful and surprising, but it's not. Overall, a disapointing read.

  • Operation Mincemeat: How a Dead Man and a Bizarre Plan Fooled the Nazis and Assured an Allied Victory

As plans got under way for the Allied invasion of Sicily in June 1943, British counter-intelligence agent Ewen Montagu masterminded a scheme to mislead the Germans into thinking the next landing would occur in Greece. This extraordinary operation called for a dead body, dressed as a Royal Marine officer and carrying false information about a pending Allied invasion of Greece, to wash up on a Spanish shore near the town of a known Nazi agent.

Jack M says: "Better than the movie"
    "A Great Reading Pleasure"
    Overall

I am drawn to historical fiction and non-fiction. This book feels like fiction, but is actually true! It is well narrated, intelligent and compelling. It is an amazing cat & mouse spy game between the British, Americans, Spanish and Germans. Although you know the ending from the start, it's a wonderful ride. I highly recommend it!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Got 40 hours to kill? You’ll find the time when you start listening to Lee’s take on Follett’s epic – and widely celebrated – novel of 12th-century England. The Pillars of the Earth tells the story of Philip, prior of Kingsbridge, a devout and resourceful monk driven to build the greatest Gothic cathedral the world has known...of Tom, the mason who becomes his architect - a man divided in his soul...and of the beautiful, elusive Lady Aliena, haunted by a secret shame....

    CynNC says: "Captivating"

    Long book but good story.

All children mythologize their birth... So begins the prologue of reclusive author Vida Winter's beloved collection of stories, long famous for the mystery of the missing thirteenth tale. The enigmatic Winter has always kept her violent and tragic past a secret. Now old and ailing, she summons a biographer to tell the truth about her extraordinary life: Margaret Lea, a young woman for whom the secret of her own birth remains an ever-present pain.

PA Law says: "Haunting and beautiful tale"
    "It grows on you"

I liked the book more, the more I got into it. It is primarily a book for women, particularly for women who enjoy "classic" literature. I am a man, but did enjoy the story - especially the second half.

  • Pershing: The Great Generals Series

In this persuasive biography, Jim Lacey sheds light on General Pershing's legacy as the nation's first modern combat commander, setting the standard for today's four-star officers. When the U.S. entered into World War I in 1917, they did so with inadequate forces. In just over a year, Pershing built and hurled a one-million-man army against 40 battle-hardened German divisions.

Kevin says: "Fresh look at a great general!"
"Well Done Bio - Very interesting"

I purchased this for my 16 year old son to write a paper for high school. Both of us enjopyed the story. Good narration too.

With vividly realized characters and a breathtaking pace, Last Man Standing is another spellbinding title from David Baldacci, best selling author of Wish You Well. When the FBI Hostage Rescue Team is ambushed, it is up to sole survivor Web London to find the killer.

    Chad says: "Great book"
    "Boring and Tedious"
    Overall

Psycho-thriller without muct interest. It plods along with lots of form and little substance. Very few heart-pounding scenes in favor of a good bit of internal dialogue. Characters are not that compelling. A disappointing read.

"This book is for the dogs!"
    Overall

This is a tedious book that at best is 3 times as long as it needs to be. The story labors through a lot of excess verbage to nowhere. The ending is disappointing and pointless. The narration is also slow and methodical. THis is neigher a fast or enjoyable read.
