Extreme Measures and Pursuit of Honor is one of the best books I have ever listened to but it was just that one book divided into two so Vince Flynn (who one of my favorite authors) could make an extra buck. I would have enjoyed the book just as much as a 2 credit, 25 hour book. The end of Pursuit was a little weak as a lone book but as the end of the both it was very fitting. Overall this these two books are in my top ten rating. Every American should read this author as he is one of the few authors out there with a clue as to how the muslim world really looks at this county. An how the liberal left makes things so much easier for the the extremist.
What it is it with the people of this country and their need to have a happy ending to every story. The only time that a happy ending is a must is in the massage parlor. I'm just not sure what people expected from this FINAL book. None of these books were the work of a great fantasy novelist but they were interesting and fun. I thought part of the allure of this series was that it would be completed in four books. Which is nice because you don't have to buy 14 books just to hear an end you wont be happy with anyway. This book was wrapped up nicely. To get the answers to everything that happened from the beginning of this story would take the 14 books this author could never have written. He is young and will get better. For a first shot at a fantasy epic it was pretty good. In the interview at the end he tells us how hard this last book was for him. I mean this was the authors first real battle with writers block. You animals have to remember this is the work of a hatchling. So try to remember what you are listening to, Eragon, not Ender or the Dragon Reborn. It was a nice conclusion to a nice story.
All you people complaining that the Butcher camp should just have waited for Marsters should relax. There is the truth and than there is what really happened. Marsters had delayed the audio version once and then wanted to do it again. Sounds like a hold out situation to me. I have all twelve books and am sad to see James go but I have 8 credits I havent used because I haven't real wanted to hear anything except this book. So am I disappointed, of course, but Im getting the audio version. It will take 30 min to get used to the new guy and he doesn't sound bad at all. Its not like when King had to switch from Muller to Gullidel. Now that was brutal. two completely different sounding narrators. So suck it up and move on because 12 books with the same narrator is pretty good, it doesnt happen often. It could be worse I saw someone write they wished the narrator of code alexa(or whatever) could have read instead of Glover that would have kept me from getting the audio version. Harry Dresden with a girls voice. ohh boy!!!! Give this guy a chance he might be better.
This was the best Prey book in the last couple of years but it was also one of the most anti-climatic. There was a lot of building to the final show down and it just went flat. The story was great and kept me interested the whole way just will it hadn't ended so abruptly. It was a worthy disstraction while I impatiently wait for the next Dresden book. I guess every book can't end like Changes but I wish they could.
Jim Butcher talks at the beginning of this book and says that a lot of fans say that this book is really where the series begins to take off. He couldn't have made a truer statement. This is one of the best books I have ever listened to. As far a suspense goes, this book doesn't stop, every time you think something is resolved it just blows back up but not in a dull or typical way. The intensity never lets up at any point and even the last sentence in the book is a perfect fit. If you only mildly enjoyed the first or second books then please don't quit there give this series one more shot and you will be hooked!
I listened to the first book and enjoyed it. It was a good story and was well written and spoken. The first half of the first book took long time to get going and in the end the 5 stars seemed more hype then reality. But this book is a different story a you are already emotionally attached to the characters and from the beginning to end the book has its hooks in you. BETTER STORY, BETTER PACE, BETTER CHARACTERS. Just all around a much better book. I know some will find that hard to believe since so many people thought the first book was the best thing since sliced bread but you people will see it can get better.
I was always a fan of the Anne Rice Vampire Cronicles and for many years I have been hoping to find another vampire series that I would enjoy as much. I thought I had found it with this series but I was wrong. I enjoyed the first book a lot but each book has gotten a little worse. I am a third of the way through this book and I don't think I could be happier that my credits came today so I can move on to something else.(went with the new James Lee Burke) Sookie has becomes such a pig I can't take it anymore. Anytime she gets around a man that is even half way good looking she is so wet my Ipod is dripping. I don't know if the author is doing some sort of womans lib. thing or what but it is so disturbing to listen to her whine over whether she should screw this one or whack off that one. I cant take it. Why isn't Fabio on the cover of these books because that is what this series has become, second rate romance novels. I don't need chapter after chapter of sexual episodes and sexual tension. These are supposed to be mystery novels. Charlaine Harris isn't that very good of a writer to begin with but I hope she can get back to weaving a descent story in the next book. I am sure I will finish this book because I hate not finishing a book but I am in no rush. Don't get me wrong the sex scenes are very steamy and hot but that is not what I am looking for when I am listening at work. I think a lot of the guys in the machine shop I work at don't want to see me walking around with a "Stake" of my own. Hope she gets back to mystery end of the stories in the later books.
This was an extremely well written book. There was great character development and the story was good. But that was the problem, the story was good once it got going but it took an insane amount of time get moving. I'd say it took 6 or 7 hours to start moving. I almost didn't stick with it but in the end I did and it was worth it. But if you are checking this book out because of it winning the "Best of 2008" I would go with "Catch 44" it was excellent. "Extreme Measures" by Vince Flynn was very good also.
