Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am a future teacher, currently in grad school. I fully anticipate working with students from a variety of languages and must be prepared to speak with and to them and their families in their native language in and out of class. I have always been a difficult foreign language student - until this.

You will more likely than not just learn Spanish from this. Use each lesson twice or more daily, repeated the next day until you are confident that you are speaking what you have heard. This program moves quickly from first to last track and you can keep up with daily effort.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    No storyline to speak of.

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Both male and female voices used are excellent and paced just right for slow western ears.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not possible, intended to take about 30 days.

    Any additional comments?

Buy this bundle, not the parts, you will save just a bit more that way.

Perhaps one of the most influential and controversial books in history, Machiavelli’s The Prince raises issues that are still debated centuries after its publication. The theories he developed in The Prince were derived from his observation of the successes and failures of the ruling class. The Prince was designed as a practical guide for newly appointed rulers and is required reading for all persons in a position of authority who strive for grandeur in business and politics.

Peter Batchelor is a fair reader, however, his voice does not allow for a listening at full speed. Joe Mantegna would be an excellent reader.

Dramatic alterations in political power have corrected the once prevalent vision of a European-centered world. While the centers of European culture flourished, decayed and sprouted in turn, empires in Africa rose, ruled, resisted, and succumbed. Much of Africa's past has now been excavated from ignorance and error, revealing a rich and previously little-known human heritage.

The language of this text is quite out of date, actually referring to black people in Africa as "colored" - quite out of date for modern language, especially when other ethnic groups are identified by actual names instead of outdated language.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Narration suffered from a lack of intentional variety that could have batter differentiated who was actually speaking.

The ninth edition of this widely acclaimed text has been extensively revised to reflect the latest scholarship and the most recent events in the Middle East. As an introduction to the history of this turbulent region from the beginnings of Islam to the present day, the book is distinguished by its clear style, broad scope, and balanced treatment.

What made the experience of listening to A Concise History of the Middle East, Ninth Edition the most enjoyable?

This book gives a detailed treatment of the history of the Middle East from about the start of Islam forward. The first half addresses history leading up to about the 1800s and modernization while the second half leads through the period after that. There is a light mention of the pre-Islamic period, but that is not the focus. That part of history is better addressed through other, focused texts.

    Any additional comments?

Multiple listens are highly indicated because of the density of information and length of recording. It can be done in a day at 2x and you will still benefit from additional listening time.

What does B.J. Harrison bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Harrison supplies emotion that a first read does not always capture. I actually feel the sense of urgency and panic in many scenes.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Certainly, and more than once.
