"Mmm mmm good!"
OMG - I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Finally, a heroine with a dirty mouth and a disposition as snarky as mine! I really liked her. There were plenty of one-liners that were just hilarious... What did the zombie say to the prostitute???? Heehehehe. Also, I liked the narrator. She's feels like Angel. Nice choice!
I definitely will be reading more!
"I'm a bit torn"
Harkness is a master storytelling; the world was rich and full of color. What you could also appreciate was how everything that the character's loved was shown, not told. I learned about wine as Matthew explained it and fell in love with the beauty of alchemical manuscripts as Diana read them. Brilliantly done.
I just wish this much care was put into the actual plot... For it to be as long as it was... not much happened. I've heard someone say that this was the adult Twilight. I agree - and that's not a good thing. Not at all...
"Meh..."
This one was quite intresting. Not saying I liked or disliked it; I'm somewhere in between.
But first, let me say that I do prefer "Alive Harry" to "Dead Harry." Having a "sit back and watch" Dresden was, in fact, not cool. I didn't like seeing him in such a passive role. I'm my head I kept screaming for him to do something, and I just couldn't rectify him being dead as a viable reason for him to not do things. It just didn't work. Then of course there's the "Chicago without Dresden" backdrop. Karrin was more annoying; Molly was eh; I absolutely what happened with Bob...
But I was happy with the resolution. I was shocked, floored actually, to learn who killed Dresden. Didn't see that coming.
"Oh...my....GAWD!"
I spent my New Years Eve/Day listening to Cold Days. Pretty much 16 hours straight. Time well worth it. This is undoubtably not only my favorite book of the series (sorry Changes) - it's is my favorite book of the year.
Everything I love about Harry Dresden can be found in this book. And the surprises/plot twists - i've never gasped so much in my reading life. I mean holy crap. It's one thing for a book to be great. It's one thing for a series to be excellent. But for the main character/storyline to still be this damn thrilling & thought-provoking 14 books in is a major achievement.
What got me the most is that there have been characters who I've never liked - and by the end of this book, I not only understood but liked & respect by the end of this book.
I will not start breaking this apart. What I will say is that I'm very very very VERY excited to see what is coming next. And hope that it's already halfway finished cuz I really don't want to wait a year for the next one - or gulp - even longer.Long live Harry effing Dresden!!!!
It's also fantastic to have James Marsters back. Love his narration!
"Nice Start!"
It was pretty slow in the beginning. But by then end of the book I was fully engrossed. I really like the story. The world is pretty interesting too. I like that Cat is a tough girl. It's nice to see a strong female lead actually act like one; I hate when they're too moralistic or get conflicted all the time. Annoying.
I like Bones. He's pretty awesome. Like the Cockney accent Gilbert uses. She's a great narrator.
"Stars & stones - that was bloody fantastic!"
Wow. Just wow. I have to say this is most definitely my favorite book in the entire series. I just loved it. I'm not going to break it down and say critique each piece. As a whole, it was absolutely perfect.
And having James Marsters bring it all to life made it that much better.
"Good laughs. Great Story."

"LOVE LOVE LOVED IT!"
OMG - I was not expecting this. It was just ... sooooooooooo ... good! There was nothing about this book I didn't enjoy. Twisted Arthur, the Arcana, the death card, and the final showdown. Then, of course, there's Jackson. I want a bit of 'ol Jack. I want him to speak Cajun French to me!!!!
This was a great start to what should be a SPECTACULAR series. I hope it's a long one. It was expertly paced and painted such a great picture of a post-apoloclypic world. I'm dying for more of the Arcana!
NARRATION:
Emma Galvin is a fantastic narrator. She doesn't just read, she's completely "in it." She makes me feel like she's really there, feeling and seeing everything. I loved her from the Divergent series and she does another fantastical, spectacular job. She's one of my favorites, no doubt.
I really enjoyed Keith Nobbs too. My first experience with him, definitely not the last! Hope I can find some solo narration jobs of his.
"Survey says... meh."
Well - this book felt more like a filler to me. I didn't really like it at all.
What I especially didn't like was Eliane coming back. It's like... what's done is done. I would like Harry to get into a relationship though. I thought it was hilarious that Carlos was a virgin. After all his supposed swag... lol. Nicely done.
All in all ... this one was kind of blah for me. I didn't really enjoy it either way - wasn't a hit, wasn't a miss. I hope Lash is really gone. Her storyline was quite annoying. I don't really like Molly either. I would have preferred Ramirez as his apprentice.
"Creeped me the bleep out"
Okay - I wasn't ready for this book.
I wanted to sympathize for this character; I can't. I wanted to look past his anger and addiction; I can't. Everything about Hayden scares me. So much to the point of where I didn't want to listen anymore. But I had too. My eyes were so wide. I just couldn't believe it.
This was a dark novel, with a dark "hero", a malicious killer and a suprisingly horrific end. I'm not discussed by it at all nor do I think that Schwartz isn't a good writer. My level of discomfort proves his prowsee. I don't think I was supposed to come away feeling good. If the goal was to hit bottom with Hayden, then I did. I felt his pain and the pain of those around him.
But what happened to him. The killer. To Kennedy. The truth about Hayden's link to the dead case... good lord. I wasn't expecting that. I had Scooter pegged for the killer. But geez. Wow... wow.
I feel gritty and dirty and sad. Part of that has to do with Ray Porter's excellent narration. When Hayden broke down in group with Kennedy I was brought to tears. It's just. damn.
"Daywalkers...hummmph!"
I like my vamps mean, sexy and combustible! Not sure if I will continue this series. Unlikely....
