Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Just finished listening to this book for about the 5th time. This is by far my favorite series. Completely disagree with the negative criticisms of the narrator. Raudman imbues Kate with exactly the right attitude, snark, and vulnerablilty. With each book, the narration of the minor characters improves as their characterization is developed. The beautiful thing about Kate is that she is a kick-butt heroine with depth. She's a born and bred warrior, with a sharp wit, and realistic flaws. From the first paragraph, the information being given is crucial to understanding the character and the world. Each story is interesting and exciting, and the running back-stories keep you waiting impatiently for the next book. A must-listen for fans of urban fantasy

Zoë Merrick lived an ordinary life until late one night, she was brutally attacked and left for dead. She survived, saved by a stranger who witnessed her undergo a physical transformation. That's not the only thing that's different. Zoë is unable to control an unexplainable energy coursing through her body. Justus De Gradi is a man who can teach her that control. He's handsome, arrogant, and not entirely human. He reveals that she is a Mage - an immortal made of light, not magic. She must now make a choice: Rebuild her life in the human world with the man who saved her, or live with Justus and learn how to use her extraordinary gifts. Justus has sworn an oath to protect her life, but can he guard her from the one man who has a right to claim it?

I ordered the first 3 of this series based on overall positive reviews, but I was very disappointed. The first one was ok, the second more of the same and I just can't find the will to even try the 3rd. Main female character is just too weak with a lot of dependence on all of the men around her, who are just smitten with her for no apparent reason. I prefer a heroine who is more in charge of her own destiny rather than one who sits around while things happen to her. Returning the 3rd and won't go on with the series.

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: If there' s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it. As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers.

Would you consider the audio edition of Magic Breaks to be better than the print version?

Renee Raudman and Ilona Andrews is my absolute favorite narrator/author combination. I love to listen to these books over and over (and over.) I love the way Renee reads Kate, she really picks up on her attitude. Also love her performances of all of the other main characters. So much differentiation and great emotional reads.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Kate. Just Kate. Huge fangirl crush. I loved Curran in this book also - always love him but especially in this book. I actually love all the characters, such great character development. My favorite thing is that everyone always acts in character as they have been established in the other books - but they also show growth (which can be lacking in a lot of my other favorite series.)

    Any additional comments?

I have never felt more satisfied with a book. I couldn't have predicted where it would go, but it all makes sense and is so enjoyable to experience. I will start listening to it again immediately to pick up on things I may have rushed through the first time. I really felt this was a perfect installment of my favorite series. So happy there is more coming.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta's paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more is at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can't stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love the Kate Daniels books and have re-listened to all of them multiple times. The characters are alive and genuine and the stories are fun and exciting.

What about Ren??e Raudman???s performance did you like?

I feel Renee Raudman does a great job of narrating these books and really do not understand the negative criticisms. If a narrator can read several voices in a conversation, and I know who is talking - I think that says a lot about their skill. Additionally, Kate is a complex character and if you listen to what is going on in the story, it does require that she sound fearful and desperate at times, as well as strong and often snarky. I would be sad to listen to the remaining books without this narrator.
