A classic story that moves at a quick pace. You don't have much time to feel bad for him because his luck quickly changes. I real loved this book and listening to it again. The guy narrator does a great job.
The time period that it was set in, and Benjamin's excitement for life. He packs a lot of living into a what seems like a short lifetime.
Benjamin I would love to meet and here more about his life. I would also like a word with his father about his poor parenting skills.
I absolutely do not want to watch the movie that this book was loosely based on because I have a feeling it doesn't even catch the essence, and how magically wonderful this book was. A story about a average person and his family growing up in India, and the journey that delivers them to France. It's also about grit and strength of a family, and their focus on their own path. At the same time it's also about the act of others caring and sharing their knowledge that can be passed on to help others as their own legacy. I'm just so in love with this book.
I can't stop telling people about this book. The author does such a magnificent job of describing the great Alaskan frontier that I'm left awestruck. Never have I read anyone describe the wilderness and nature so well. All the while spinning a plot that leaves you questioning what is real and is make believe. Is the snow child real? This is magic!
Wow! This vibrant story pulls you in from the beginning and never slows down. The historical accuracy is very well researched, and all encompassing of its time. I'm now inspired to go back and read all of her older books that I read in school. Wow!
Same old material and at times hard to hear. Don't get me wrong, but 5min in and I was over this book.
The woman narrating this book takes me back to a time of thriftyness and hard work. I really enjoyed this book and recommended it to my Dad. Also it is full of lots of great recipes if you enjoy cooking with butter, beacon, and heavy cream. Only turn off was her occasional put down of people of the later generation as lazy.
The narrators were excellent bouncing between the two different characters making them come alive.
Two of my favorite characters were Belle and Mama Mae. How could you not fall in love with such strong ladies. Even Lavinia you fall in love with when she is little and hope threw out the book that she finds her voice.
Everything about thier voices made thier characters so indearing.
Yes, but at the same time it covers a lot of heavy subjects so I needed a break so not to be depressed by the hardship and dispair that characters face.
A must read for any American history buff.
The Sh-t my dad says reminds me of the Sh-t my father-in law says! I listened to it with my husband on a two hour drive to celebrate our anniversary in Durango. Great time shared by both of us. Thanks!
The dog. And the Mexico trip. The book as a whole was so funny and rather interesting that it never lagged and my wife listened to it twice so I could enjoy it also.
Well worth te expense. We listened to a $5 bargain on the same trip. After this book it was a big let down.
Not if Fred Stella was reading it! His voice sounds stuffy and slightly British and doesn't at all match up with what the author is talking about. I had such a hard time understanding him that I had a hard time understanding the reading material.
Morgan Freedman would be awesome!
The books concept was interesting.
It was a waist of money!
