I usually prefer fiction but this fascinating history was so excellent that I couldn't stop listening. The story uses the life of Roald Dahl as a focus to explore British Intelligence in the U.S. leading up to the American entry in World War II. This well researched and well written story brings the period (30's, 40's and 50's)to life. I found this story informative, enjoyable and thought provoking. The reader added to my enjoyment, I'm glad I listened rather than reading.
I've listened to all 3 of this series, and can't wait for the next. I wish there were more band members with stories to tell. The characters are developed and the author has a wicked sense of humor, she makes you laugh out loud which causes others to look at you strangely. I haven't been disappointed in the second and third books, she seems to get better and better. The reader is perfect for these stories.
This is my second Cormoran Strike mystery and the second is even better than the first. Great writing and great characters, don't miss this.
I'm a big fan of Jo Jo Moyes and this book didn't disappoint. I thought the 3 readers were all excellent and once the story got going I couldn't stop listening. I felt sad when this ended; it's hard to find something to follow this.
I really enjoyed listening to this, the reader was fabulous in every way. All in all a very enjoyable series and I am waiting for the next.
I thought the reader was great but this book was way, way too long and I just couldn't finish it in spite of a great performance by the reader. The story didn't really go anywhere and the characters were so annoying--she was ninny and he was beyond crazy and controlling. I didn't find any reason to continue after nearly 10 hours with 7 hours to to go--in part 1!!! This book needs editing and probably rewriting but even that might not save it.
I rarely dislike a book so much that I can't finish it but this is the exception. Perhaps if the reader were better I could have stuck it out. The writing isn't great but a good performance could have made up for that. I found the story wordy and the characters irritating--perfect match for the reader. Just couldn't finish this.
Wasn't sure I would like this but it was very compelling. The author writes very well and the reader was perfect at making the characters believable. The story is a bit disturbing but I can't stop thinking about these characters. The ending was very unexpected and quite believable.
I wasn't sure I wanted to listen to this but I'm so glad I did. The story and the reader very riveting and I couldn't stop listening. I finished about a week ago and keep thinking about the characters. In addition to the great characters, this story is very thought provoking in a very good way. Excellent.
I am a huge fan of this author and reader. I've listened to all of Mr. McKinty's books and Gerard Doyle is the perfect reader. I'm never disappointed and always happily pleased by the language and the reading. These books are so special and not to be missed.
She is a decent reader but someone should have corrected her pronunciations. Among other things she can't pronounce Eloise--which is very jarring.
I'm enjoying this series. The characters and the stories are very entertaining and I enjoy the historical period. Nice light listening.
