I usually prefer fiction but this fascinating history was so excellent that I couldn't stop listening. The story uses the life of Roald Dahl as a focus to explore British Intelligence in the U.S. leading up to the American entry in World War II. This well researched and well written story brings the period (30's, 40's and 50's)to life. I found this story informative, enjoyable and thought provoking. The reader added to my enjoyment, I'm glad I listened rather than reading.
I rarely dislike a book so much that I can't finish it but this is the exception. Perhaps if the reader were better I could have stuck it out. The writing isn't great but a good performance could have made up for that. I found the story wordy and the characters irritating--perfect match for the reader. Just couldn't finish this.
Wasn't sure I would like this but it was very compelling. The author writes very well and the reader was perfect at making the characters believable. The story is a bit disturbing but I can't stop thinking about these characters. The ending was very unexpected and quite believable.
I wasn't sure I wanted to listen to this but I'm so glad I did. The story and the reader very riveting and I couldn't stop listening. I finished about a week ago and keep thinking about the characters. In addition to the great characters, this story is very thought provoking in a very good way. Excellent.
I am a huge fan of this author and reader. I've listened to all of Mr. McKinty's books and Gerard Doyle is the perfect reader. I'm never disappointed and always happily pleased by the language and the reading. These books are so special and not to be missed.
She is a decent reader but someone should have corrected her pronunciations. Among other things she can't pronounce Eloise--which is very jarring.
I'm enjoying this series. The characters and the stories are very entertaining and I enjoy the historical period. Nice light listening.
I don't blame the reader who is usually good but I was really bothered by the Danish accents which at times seemed almost Danish by way of Atlanta. If you can't do a decent accent just skip it.
Unlike a lot of people I liked the detail and the somewhat slow pace. The story was unusual and disturbing, but I couldn't stop listening. I really liked the character development and the politics of the police department, especially the development of the relationship between Assad and his boss. This is more interesting and more character driven than a lot of police stories and I look forward to more.
This is a great story and I enjoyed every minute. The narration was excellent and the story pulled me in, even though I could see the end coming. I haven't decided about purchasing the sequel as I'm afraid I might be disappointed.
I really enjoyed this book. The narration and the writing were excellent and I really want more of these characters.
An excellent and smartly written mystery. I enjoyed every minute. The plot for me was secondary to the many interesting and well written characters.
With a better reader this pretty standard contemporary romance could have been o.k. The reader's voice was nice but her reading was one of the worst I've ever listened to. This was poorly produced with laughable pronunciations throughout.
I love contemporary romance fiction but good ones are hard to find. I will keep looking.
A producer or someone should have gone through to help with pronunciation.
Well I finished it, mostly because I was knitting and didn't have anything else to listen to. This was an ordinary story, not that well written, but would have been o.k. with a decent reader. A great reader can really help most books. This book suffers from less than great writing and a poor reader.
