I'm a mom. I have drama in my life. I don't want books with the F-bomb, nor graphic violence. I read for fun and to bring my family together. I read for reducing stress levels. We have never had a television in our home and our children are now mid twenties to 19. We listen together and look for belly-wrenching laughter. So what is it like to live without a TV? Awesomely educational and inspirational. Each new book is a marvel.

Although a year has passed, not a day goes by without Meggie thinking of Inkheart, the book whose characters became real. But for Dustfinger, the fire-eater brought into being from words, the need to return to the tale has become desperate. When he finds a crooked storyteller with the ability to read him back, Dustfinger leaves behind his young apprentice Farid and plunges into the medieval world of his past.

    Overall

I had some mixed feelings about the narration. At first it really bothered me. As I listened more, I really was dragged into the story. Since the primary part of the audio is the storyline I tried to focus on what the characters were actually doing. As the story progressed I came to really enjoy the narration. I think the problem with this narration is it follows Lynn Redgrave. It is really hard to change from a woman to a man narrator when the characters stay the same.

I am looking forward to InkDeath. It should help us wrap up a great story/series.

Todd, the youngest of four children, has a developmental disability that keeps him at home on the farm with his mother and father. One special holiday season, Todd hears an ad on the radio from a shelter looking for temporary homes for their dogs during the holiday week. When Todd's parents at last give in to his pleas for this charitable cause, the family is faced with an entire shelter full of dogs needing homes.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The whole family. George, MaryAnn and Todd were great. They just worked together like a close knit family.

Which character – as performed by Mark Bramhall – was your favorite?

I didn't have a single character that was a greater favorite. I can't think of a better narrator either. The tones, the voice alterations and just the sentiment behind the words worked with Mark's performance. What a joy!

Who was the most memorable character of A Dog Named Christmas and why?

Christmas. A dog person will just understand. The credit in this book says something like 'For my wife, she has taught me so much - not the least of which is the value of a good dog'

Families who have dogs understand the values that dogs teach us - any day that ends with a bit of ball throwing/fetching is a good day, sofas are for snuggling, the outfit/haircut/makeup don't have to be perfect to be the perfect companion for a dog.

    Any additional comments?

This is a short but exceptional story. It is perfect for this time of year and it is a perfect story for families. I wanted to listen all the way through but the day caught up with me and instead we went to bed with just over an hour left. While making breakfast we finished the story. We giggled about the story events as we let the dogs in then let the dogs out. By story end our dogs were curled up on the sofa ready for a mid morning nap.

A few of you may want a box of tissues but overall this is not a tear-jerker story, this is a feel good story with a good ending.

Dare I suggest that you give this book as a gift? It is awesome!

This is the story of one of Church history's most revered women, the godly mother of John and Charles Wesley. This biography recounts the story of a woman who used her strong leadership and faith to raise well educated and spiritually disciplined children. Her unwavering devotion to God and family in the face of grief, poverty, and a sometimes difficult marriage is a tremendous inspiration.

I am not sure when or why I put this book in my library. I think I viewed it to be a period book of life in the early 1700s. I am not Methodist and I don't generally read historical accounts of religious figures. So aside from me scratching my head as to why I bought this book I really liked the strong matriarch in this family tale. A recent funeral really impressed upon me how much a strong motherly figure plays into keeping families tied together in harmony. Susanna Wesley is such a woman.

The period during which this book takes place is so different than today in how many people had nursemaids in the home, staff and certainly how many trials people went through. Listening to how one nurse took a newborn to bed with her, then rolled over on the baby was a good modern times reminder that babies have their own beds. But I wonder how our society would react going from our very low infant death rate to what Susanna lived with as sad but normal. I think our society is too upset by minor things and we over-react when the mail/package is not delivered in two days or less. Yet Susanna really endured much more than we have been trained to endure. We are wimps compared to what life was like just 300 years ago. We whine too much. Susanna was a fantastic woman who had her head on straight.

    This book was inspiring. Bravo!

The most iconic love story of all time, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is an epic-scale tragedy of desire and revenge. Despite the bitter rivalry that exists between their families, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet have fallen madly in love. But when the long-running rivalry boils over into murder, the young couple must embark on a dangerous and deadly mission to preserve their love at any cost. An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast performance featuring Calista Flockhart as Juliet.

This presentation was quite nice. At first I thought I might stop the performance and find a copy to read along but then getting the voices down helped. Dramatic recordings can sometimes be too dramatic. The story flowed well and was enjoyable. This isn't a recording to listen as you focus on other things, this takes some attention to be paid. If one knows the story by heart from readings, etc, then maybe they can count stitches, or pay the bills while listening. I could not do that!

I will listen again though, which is the real telling of enjoyment, is it not?

There's a folder in Principal Kelling's office that's as thick as a phonebook and it's growing daily. It's filled with the incident reports of every time Clayton Hensley broke the rules. There's the minor stuff like running in the hallways and not being where he was suppose to be when he was supposed to be there. But then there are also reports that show Clay's own brand of troublemaking, like the most recent addition: the art teacher has said that the class should spend the period drawing anything they want....

We all have a troublemaker side to our personalities, some of us just display it more often than others. There are lots of kid shenanigans in this book and a few need the intervention of some strong parenting, others are just kid excitement (running in the halls). The best part of this whole book is it shows honesty will always serve to the best end. When the truth is vital to daily life there are very few hiccups teams can not overcome.

    Nice ending.

The Grayson twins are moving to a new town. Again. Although it's a drag to be constantly mistaken for each other, in truth, during those first days at a new school, there's nothing better than having a twin brother there with you. But on day one of sixth grade, Ray stays home sick, and Jay is on his own. No big deal.

What made the experience of listening to Lost and Found the most enjoyable?

Twins are so different. I had not thought of being a twin in this fashion so the topic was quite new to me. Do most twins feel like they want to be their own person and it is annoying when everyone calls them by their sibling's name? Who knows! I found the book funny, silly, enjoyable, and short but captivating.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Lost and Found?

I giggled about the skinned knee and the chicken wings.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I was able to listen in a relatively short period of time. It was fun.

    Any additional comments?

Kids books are quite interesting. Their perspective is so different from the 9-5 rut most adults live in. Short, full of laughs and great to share is how I sum up the kids section on Audible.

When it comes to the holidays, no story brings us back to the true spirit of giving like O. Henry’s classic "The Gift of the Magi". So this year we’ve asked some of your favorite Audible narrators—Audie Award winners Katherine Kellgren, Oliver Wyman, and Jonathan Davis—to bring to life this timeless tale, plus two more of O. Henry’s gems: "The Cop and the Anthem" and "The Last Leaf", in this holiday collection.

How do you outwit a Twit? Mr. and Mrs. Twit are the smelliest, ugliest people in the world. They hate everything, except playing mean jokes on each other, catching innocent birds to put in their Bird Pies, and making their caged monkeys, the Muggle-Wumps, stand on their heads all day. But the Muggle-Wumps have had enough. They don't just want out, they want revenge.

Ronald Dahl is very creative but not politically correct. This book was quite enjoyable. The created words and silliness were a fun experience. Don't take the subject matter seriously, it is silliness only.

I love Roald Dahl books. This is wonderfully narrated and certain words will cause you to giggle! I've been walking around asking each person in the house if they know where their miniature Wellies are located. They have all been laughing at me. Tis took my headphones off and the book was playing for the whole house.

    Astonishing afternoon! Highly recommended.

This audio has repetitive reinforcements encouraging relaxation and positive thought. The soft music and calming voice are nice. This would be good to listen to prior to falling asleep. If you are not able to rest while listening the repeating voice may be annoying. This is not a book for listening and learning, it is a coach for learning to go to a resting thought process in mere minutes. This is a positive coach reinforcing good behavior of giving, compassion and love. Broken into two chapters so you can jump to a repeating session instead of starting at the beginning again.

    Nicely done.

From 1949 to 1957, Dragnet pioneered new levels of realism on radio. Every crime investigated by Sergeant Joe Friday was taken from the actual case files of the Los Angeles Police Department, with only "the names changed to protect the innocent". This collection features five episodes: Big Lilly, Big Revolt, Big Ham, Big Bop, and Big Lift.

There are 5 episodes in this collection. If you can't find the link to search for the Dragnet Collections then search for DragCOL instead.

I've listened to Dragnet for years. These volumes appear as single editions in your library. Most of them have great sound quality. Because each story is individual you will not see reviews on the whole volume very often. Most reviews are on each story.

Most original radio episodes were sponsored by cigarette companies. Sometimes a plug for the cigarettes is made by Jack Webb, the primary voice of Dragnet, sometimes other celebrities will join the list of promoters. There are a few extra comments such as to attend church each week, become active in your community, serve on jury duty and even one which recommends reading your Bible during National Bible Week. Each episode has a story of crime and punishment, most have a twist for the culture of the 1940s and 1950s. Most stories could happen today. Heroin, drug use, stealing, forgery, murder - nothing different from our local news, what is different is leaving a dime for use of the phone, lunch plates costing $2, offering smokes to every person they meet along the way. Police officers can no longer afford to keep everyone in cigarettes the way these are passed out.

The radio crimes are less violent because language that could cross the airwaves was limited and could not use slang or street terms. This makes Dragnet episodes suitable for all ages. Worthwhile and certainly a great value when you consider the price and how many hours you get of listening. Dragnet is awesome!
