The Metropole Hotel, Brighton. After a heady New Year’s Eve ball, a woman is brutally raped as she returns to her room. A week later, another woman is attacked. Both victims’ shoes are taken by the offender.... Detective Superintendent Roy Grace soon realises that these new cases bear remarkable similarities to an unsolved series of crimes in the city back in 1997.

    "Growth"
    Overall

I've listened to the previous books and am so pleased that the author has the main character experiencing positive growth. No 'darkness' in this soul.
I enjoyed the people and the plot. Unfortunately the narrator does not understand the tone of the story which leads to his pace & inflection being off.
    Still worthwhile to listen to.

The Hostage. Police officer Helen Weeks walks into her local newsagent's on her way to work. Little does she know that this simple daily ritual will change her life forever. It's the last place she expects to be met with violence, but as she waits innocently at the till, she comes face to face with a gunman. The Demand. The crazed hostage-taker is desperate to know what really happened to his beloved son, who died a year before in youth custody.

As usual with Mark Billigham's books I enjoyed this Tom Thorne novel - however the author should not have narrated it. He should understand the characters better than anyone and yet it sounds as if its the first time he's met them. The mood suffers as a result of this.

Convalescing in Sandytown, Dalziel befriends Charlotte Heywood who is researching the benefits of alternative therapy. With much in common, the two soon find themselves in league when trouble comes to town. Sandytown's principal landowners have grandiose plans for the resort -- none of which they can agree on. One of them has to go, and when one of them does, in spectacularly gruesome fashion, DCI Peter Pascoe is called in to investigate -- with Dalziel and Charlotte providing unwelcome support.

    Story

As mentioned by other reviewers, the first section of the story is told via e-mail messages between a young woman & her sister, and recordings of "the fat man's" thoughts. I found the e-mails irksome but on the other hand, the musings of the fat man are at times quite funny.

The author repeats himself a good deal which is tedious but all in all the plot was enjoyable.

Jonathan Keeble was excellent, as always.

The plot is enjoyable - with enough twists and surprises to keep you intrigued. Unfortunately the narrator misses the feel of the book and detracts from the enjoyment thereof.

Gaius Petreius Ruso is a divorced and down-on-his-luck army doctor who has made the rash decision to seek his fortune in the most inclement outpost of the Roman Empire: Britannia. His arrival in Deva (more commonly known as Chester) does little to improve his mood and, after a straight 36 hours on the wards in the Fort, he succumbs to a moment of insanity and rescues an injured slave girl, Tilla.

Tim Ekaterin's merchant bank, like all banks, only invests in sure things. Now he's about to involve it in ₤5 million of prime horseflesh, a stallion called Sandcastle. Top breeders reckon it's the safest bet in racing. But racing doesn't just attract the money men of the city. It's riddled with all kinds of dubious dealmakers. People who don't think twice about breaking bones. People to whom no bet is safe until it's paid in blood, Ekaterin's blood.

Nina says: "Sue me -- I love D. Francis"
    "Disappointing"

This is certainly not Dick Francis at his best, for that matter nor is it Toni Britton at his best. The story takes ages to get underway and is as exciting as wilted cabbage. Even Britton sounds bored. I love Dick Francis' books but unfortunately this was a disappointment.

Brought up by the resident ghosts, ghouls and spectres, Bod has an eccentric childhood learning about life from the dead. But for Bod there is also the danger of the murderer still looking for him - after all, he is the last remaining member of the family.

Not at all what I expected, it is whimsical & enchanting. Neil Gaiman narrates with exellent timing and creates the perfect mood. Loved the quirky music.

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to deliver an evening lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. Within minutes of his arrival, the night takes a bizarre turn. A disturbing object is discovered in the Capitol Building. The object is an ancient invitation, meant to usher its recipient into a long-lost world of hidden esoteric wisdom. And when Langdon's mentor is kidnapped, Langdon's only hope of saving him is to accept this invitation and follow wherever it leads him.

tess says: "Very typical of Dan Brown. Easy brilliance."
    "Tedious"
    Overall

The basic plot is interesting, unfortunately it does not survive the lectures on ancient mystecism. I fastworwarded through a big portion of the book. This would probably do better as a film. I enjoyed the narrator though.

John Grisham is always a good read. Unfortunately the narrator's style is so distracting that I could not enjoy it properly. He doesn't understand the feel of the book and reads it as if for children.
