An explosion rips through New York City's Grand Central Station one morning, destroying the train Karen Friedman's husband, a successful hedge-fund manager, is riding in to work. On that same day, a suspicious hit-and-run accident leaves a young man dead in Karen's hometown of Greenwich, Connecticut. Ty Hauck, a detective, becomes emotionally caught up in the case and finds a clue that shockingly connects the two seemingly unrelated events.

    "Disappointing"

I had a hard time with this particular read due to the narrator and the inexplicable use of "musical" interludes or transitions. If it were possible I would have done a fast forward through the music but had to endure its annoying interference with the flow of the story. As for the narration; I have listened to over 100 books downloaded from Audible and this was the worst I have ever encountered. It was a real disappointment.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Winter of the World picks up right where the first book left off, as its five interrelated families - American, German, Russian, English, Welsh - enter a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the Spanish Civil War and the great dramas of World War II, up to the explosions of the American and Soviet atomic bombs. As always with Ken Follett, the historical background is brilliantly researched and rendered, the action fast-moving, the characters rich in nuance and emotion.

A wonderful tapestry of lives shaped by, and shaping, the world at both personal and national levels. If, like me, you find history compelling but want much more than the dry facts which make no sense apart from the people who make it this is a compelling read. It appears to have been well researched and is certainly well crafted.
