A really nicely written and narrated story about an eccentric family, as told by the youngest son. The son is obsessed with animals and at least half the story is comprised of detailed, tedious descriptions of animals. I guess I should have known - seeing as how the title pretty much says it all! Anyway, the family interactions and activities are very fun and entertaining and make up for the less appealing parts.

That's three borings. One for the story, one for the narration and one for the lack of a story. I wanted to listen to this because I heard the movie was very powerful and well done. Obviously this book did not serve as a precursor to the script. There are so many people who "walked into the wild" written about that the listner has a hard time remembering who the book is about. I realize the author is trying to create parallels between all these people but the amount of information shared just doesn't quite bring it together. Also, the narrator is so monotone, perhaps by design, that it's hard to stay engaged. I guess I should have gone to the movie instead.

I still don't really know who was who in this story but it is well written and nice to listen to. As in any mystery, some things that were revealed were not such mysteries at all but others, like I said, still don't know how that all worked. Very enjoyable though and I may just listen again to try to figure out what I obviously missed.

Nothing happens in this book but it is an excellent story to listen to before falling asleep. When you wake up and start listening again, you won't have missed a thing! Seriously, I loved listening to this to fall asleep. The narrators voice is so soothing and sweet. Hmm, I'm getting sleepy just thinking about it.

An entertaining story that would be far less painful to listen to if it weren't true (in theory, anyway). Well written, well read and thought provoking, definitely worth the listener's time.

The two narrators for this book were exceptional! The story is beautifully written and the readers did a fabulous job bringing the characters to life. I was terribly sad to get to the end - since it really was just the beginning in many ways and I wanted the storytelling to go on.

It is this kind of exceptional material that is making Audible.com a place I can't resist!

The happy parts reminded me of my own childhood. The unhappy parts horrified me! At times, painful to read yet impossible to put down! Jeanette's story confirms that even though we all grow up in different environments, even insanely horrible ones, anyone can succeed.
