Best-selling author Jeffrey Zaslow is a Will Rogers Humanitarian Award winner and was the replacement advice columnist for Ann Landers in the Chicago Sun-Times. Here he turns his eye to a group of 11 friends who grew up in Ames, Iowa, during the 1960s, a period of unprecedented opportunity for women. What emerges is an inspiring look at the power of friendship to overcome challenges.

    Overall

Too many characters to keep track of and too many story lines to keep straight. Thought it would remind me of the group of girls I grew up in a small town with and at times it did. I listed until the end, but I had many false starts as it was hard to get into.

America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

    Overall

This book is fantastic but as the story is so dark, it does leave you a bit sad. The characters and story are written beautifully and I felt myself wishing I could help. This is a book I will never forget reading and praise it highly as one of the best I have ever read. Absolutely worth spending your credits on.
