If you are like me and have tried to read this book and given up , then this is the way to go. Neville Jason does read well.
The names both familiar and formal are accepted by the English speakers' ear and are recognized......Phew....... And it is possible to relax and enjoy this great book. History unfolds as the narrative progresses. Some books lead me to research more than the story tells.....and....................
Apart from learning more about Napoleon, I became very curious about when and how slavery come to Russia.
A great book and a journey into the past too.
LeCarre is who he is.
love him or yawn stretch ' who'?
Well I do love most of his yarns and have done for decades.
for me to hear a favourite author read his own work is just bliss
So I love Tolkien talk elfish.
in this audio
My only grief is the story is abridged,
The Narrator Bill Wallis makes this an enjoyable listen. Having heard other narrators read Mr Walker's Brubo books I have to think that if Bill is not reading I would rather the hard copy and read myself.
Like many others I love the other faces of Bruno, his wine and cheese and odd description of a dish. his garden, his love affairs (without too much detail) and his yearning to be a Dad..
These are charming stories and Bruno is very much his own man who loves his villiage and the people in it.
The stories are better without the superman aspects, like jumping out of burning buildings, however I can live with that, as Bruno is such a likeable cop.
OK it is nit picking, but if an old recording is remastered or rerecorded surely an editor is called for
That is my biggest beef, and it really does spoil the quality of the perfprmance.
Otherwise Simon Brett reads this charming early 'Feathering' story well. It was a pleasant exposure of Carol and had a gorgeous conclusion.
There may be other bio out there on Nixon and I thought Roger Stone did a great job writing on LBJ, so I have been listening to this. Not a close listen, I'll do that later
It is personal taste and I found I did not like the Stephen Hoye narration and that made listening a bit of an effort. A lot of the names, as important as they are were lost on me and I need a brief Who is Who beside me.
Hoover certainly had his camera everywhere.
This is more action packed than the Wild West.
Simon Vance is in top form.
but.... but it stopped with a 'then I woke up' ending.
more experimental than a 'short story' story to my thinking. OK it added to the character, and not the story
Now we know Daniel Pembrey can write, "bring it on" and do have Simon as narrator please.
Trust an ex British SAS soldier to be a hero. And one does wonder who else was in the club and who exactly are the dark angels and why Geordy thought.he was the target.
The story lacks a kind of cohesion and is still lots of fun. I found myself keenly engaged and wanting to learn what comes next. The cat is wonderful. So is the Secret Service visitor.
Very well read by Ian Hanmore.
Great writing and good story
I hope Audible manages to get more for us,from this author with Jot Davies reading for us.
For now, avoid downloading any other than top format as part 2 seems to be lost on 4 and 3. I think I have 6 part 1 as I tried to get part 2 without avail.
I enjoyed The Trinity Six and this is even better
As Charles Cumming is a widely acclaimed author who is well respected, I am surprised that there are so few Audible listeners. It may reflect the great divide of the pond in storytelling even if the UK and US are much closer than people know in other ways.
Waiting on Audible to release 'dead men's bones' . book4.
There are a couple of stories running through this series and they can be read or heard separately.
Not brilliant 5 stars at this time, though I expect that if the series continue with the same reader, the series may rank high 4 or 5.
Forget any Ian Rankin references from the reviewers/publishers.I am beginning to think quite a few reviewers are illiterate. (And have no idea why there will only ever be one Ian Rankin.) I get a tad sus whenever I read silly remarks like,,the new ,, etc.
On the surface there is a fairly preictable plot, a current day Batman with an Alpha and a few good fellas and girls. Then read on.
No shrinking rooms or damsels tied to railway tracks yet,
hardly serious. with silly superiors. lots of crime, graveyard shifts in graveyards. granny slasher, greasy midnight meals and new partners.
Just for fun, a low 3 star foggy frosty tale.
I did not like this one too much and
it is a very very good story
After hearing this I wonder if I need to re listen to, re read my other Bateman stories.
It is a well read provocative story
