Hig survived the flu that killed everyone he knows. His wife is gone, his friends are dead, he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, his only neighbor a gun-toting misanthrope. In his 1956 Cessna, Hig flies the perimeter of the airfield or sneaks off to the mountains to fish and to pretend that things are the way they used to be. But when a random transmission somehow beams through his radio, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists beyond the airport.

A highly entertaining post apocalyptic story. Starts a bit slow, but I think that is due to the narrative style. Give it a chance and it will grab you. It will make you laugh, think and even cry (yes, I admit I did during one part). Very few books are as full of conflicting emotions as those of Hig but you'll grow to root for his growth and cheer for him as he matures. For you in the Prepper Community, this rates up there with Alas Babylon and is easier to listen to and understand than Patriots. I highly recommend this book and hope for more from the author. Maybe a sequel with the arrival of the ... but then I'd be spoiling it!

America faces a full-scale socioeconomic collapse in the near future. The stock market plummets, hyperinflation cripples commerce and the mounting crisis passes the tipping point. Practically overnight, the fragile chains of supply and high-technology infrastructure fall, and wholesale rioting and looting grip every major city.

If you are part of the growing Prepper lifestyle, this book is a must for your library. Using actual prepping in a fictional situation, Mr. Rawles shows how to and why you should be preparing for just one of many scenarios that could happen. If you read the newspaper or watch/listen to the news, this book will frighten you with its uncanny accuracy. Originally written in the 90's, with new additions a few years later, the correlation to today's world is incredible. Give yourself a chance to survive and read/listen to this book.
