It's an interesting tale, but I like books that are closer to reality. Well written and an excellent reader. I kept on listening as it had enough twists and turns to be interesting.
It was engaging enough with some humor tossed in to be an interesting listen, but I kept thinking they must never had heard of Candid Camera - creating chaos with an unexpected happening then filming the result.
My daughter was teaching this book in her high school class so I thought I should listen to it. Each of the daughters and the mother tells her story so you get very different perspectives of the same events. The author draws completely different characters and as they age, they develop in a manner that seems consistent with the character.
You gain an appreciation for the traditional culture of the Congo and how Europeans and Americans have manged to make so much more difficult for the people. Sometimes with good intentions, but frequently with malevolent ones. Or religious fever clocked in self-righteousness.
Well worth a listen.
This is a better than average police story. The author told the story from both the dog's and the cop's perspective and did an excellent job of going back and forth. Well structured plot and well worth the time to listen.
I had heard from several people that this was a really interesting book. It was. Not a page-turner, but a story of a very good man who is dragged into the presidency. Lister has discovered germs, but the American medical establishment refuses to believe in it so Garfield dies a slow, painful death. It's a story of a madman, a good man and a man who sees his chance for fame. I really enjoyed it.
It felt a bit contrived, but was a great book for traveling across country. No one is as capable as Elvis and his buddy, but then this type of novel doesn't require that anyone really be that smart.
An twisting and turning story that was great fun to follow. You really like the main character and want him to get justice.
Poland is sometimes dismissed because they were overrun so quickly and then so many of the camps were located in their borders. This story shows that not all Poles accepted the German occupation or participated in the extermination of the Jews. This is a well-told tale of resistance in the face of certain death if they were discovered. Of doing what was right with no possible personal gain. She was an amazing woman.
I listened to it for my book club and really enjoyed the story. Sometimes you want to shake her as she seems somewhat silly. However, she isn't supposed to be particularly worldly as she arrives in Vietnam. Having been to Vietnam a couple of years ago I found it interesting to revisit those places in a different time.
What a disappointment. He changed the nature of Macbeth from a faithful general who becomes a traitor to another scheming person waiting for an opportunity. Duncan went from a good and kind leader to a leacherous old man who deserved to be removed from the throne. The sons were totally unworthy of the throne. Since Shakespeare wrote the play to ingratiate himself with the royal family this hardly seems like that kind of tale. My daughter (an English teacher) and I turned it off even though it is a short book.
