Pat Conroy, the beloved American storyteller, is also a voracious reader. He has for years kept a notebook in which he notes words or phrases, just from a love of language. But reading for him is not simply a pleasure to be enjoyed in off-hours or a source of inspiration for his own writing. It would hardly be an exaggeration to claim that reading has saved his life, and if not his life then surely his sanity.

I became interested in the book after hearing Pat Conroy speak about it online somewhere. I really enjoyed this audiobook. I will never forget his story about his mom reading Gone With The Wind to him for the first time when he was 5, and how she made it come alive.

He's a dynamic person and a terrific storyteller, and I'm glad he narrated his stories himself. What a life! What passion for the books he's read and the people who have taught him! I still occasionally "flip through" this audiobook if I'm running around town and need something satisfying to listen to. Very satisfying.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A masterpiece like none other, Brooks’ powerful performance of Haley’s words has been known to leave listeners in tears. It begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. And in that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

I listened to Gone With the Wind, and then I listened to Roots. What an mind-blowing juxtaposition it becomes, when the Roots folks end up in the cotton-planting South.

This is such a fascinating story. I don't care too much about the controversy over its ultimate accuracy; it's still a fascinating story and legacy and history. I appreciated this audiobook and was glad I listened.

I was sad when it ended, all 9283743987 hours later! I truly enjoyed every minute of it. What a different experience from having read the book (years ago) -- the audio let me appreciate some of the purely descriptive passages that I think I may have skimmed in print. The reader was great, the story, of course, is very interesting (there's a reason it's second in all-time sales only to the Bible) and it was a joy to experience on audiobook. Lots of thumbs up.
