From the end of the 18th century, Americans traveled west to find new homes and new lands. They brought with them the magics of plain people. It is from these roots of the American dream that award-winning writer Orson Scott Card has crafted what the Charlotte Observer called "a uniquely American fantasy." Using the lore and the folk magic of the men and women who settled a continent, and the beliefs of the tribes who were here before them, Card has created an alternate frontier America.

Having read all the books in this series, and loved each one, I have to say that this one, although written and narrated just as well as the others, leaves me with wanting more. There is too much unanswered for this to be the last book in the series. The narrators were exceptional, and I dearly loved the Christian overtones, which made one think about their own moral code. I was so happy to find a series that left out the usual 'hooks' of sex, blood, gut and gore.
I could not put down this series, buying them when I ran out of credits. Bravo Orson Scott Card!!!

It’s been almost a year since October "Toby" Daye averted a war, gave up a county, and suffered personal losses that have left her wishing for a good day’s sleep. She’s tried to focus on her responsibilities - training Quentin, upholding her position as Sylvester’s knight, and paying the bills - but she can’t help feeling like her world is crumbling around her, and her increasingly reckless behavior is beginning to worry even her staunchest supporters. To make matters worse, Toby’s just been asked to find another missing child…only this time it’s the changeling daughter of her fellow knight....

Good as always for this team...but I am hoping the next book tops them all. I'm feeling as if Ms McGuire is getting a bit tired of the series. It seems to be lacking in the first books wit and humor as if she's struggling to come up with different story lines for her heroine and heroes.
I did see another book that appears to be in the same series, October Daye, called 'Nacht Mayhr'... I hope to see it here in Audible soon.

I loved the first book in this series and looked forward to this one. Although good, it was not as good as the first. The story line dragged on without the 'I can't wait to hear more'.
I found myself thinking 'get on with it, will ya, already!'
I liked the narration quite well, and will probably take a chance when the next book comes out in this series...i hope there is a next one...lol

Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

this story had the most wonderful opportunity to make the reader feel the most wonderful, uplifted and soul restored in their life... guess what...? made me feel an overwhelming dispair in the pit of my stomach that took years to go away.
it is just now that i am able to comment on this story, as the heartfelt sickness overtook my ability to snap out of it quickly, as i usually can. this author has an exceptional ability to bring the reader into the story...too bad the story turned out to be so sickenly dark.
the narrators were without doubt wonderful, the only reason i was able finish the book, in hopes the possible end i saw in sight would prevail...it didn't.

very disappointed with this book. i had seen the commercials for the movie and thought it would be a very good show to watch. so when i saw it listed on audible, i went ahead and got it. just AWFUL!!!
very 'wordy', nd detailed in places there was no reason for it. nothing about the book made me want to listen to the rest of it. i missed a lot of it as i just removed the earbuds for periods of time, hoping to miss the lengthy, irritating, unnecessary details.
gotta say, after this 'listen', which i intend to return, i'm not so interested in watching the movie.
just to be fair, the narrator isn't bad, just the book...

Now she's seeing strange things all around her - dark visions from the shadow world - and living a normal life may no longer be possible no matter how hard she tries.

Bought this book a little oveer 3yrs ago, but didn't remember much past the first chapter...now I'm in the home stretch and finding it diffucult not to stop with the few remaining hours. The story is good, but the lack of dimension of the narrator is killing it. I could listen to Mia Barron, as she does have a good voice, if it weren't for her inability to 'do' the side characters. The voice of the boy 'Cam' is almost more than I take as I have never enjoyed listening to anyone talk in a 'whiney, can't get the frog out of your throat' voice.
This is the reason I have not bought the rest of the books in this series. Maybe if they changed the narrator, I would reconsider.

She’s settling into her new role as the Countess of Goldengreen; she’s actually dating again; she’s even agreed to take on Quentin as her official squire. Life is looking up all around - and that inevitably means it’s time for things to take a turn for the worse. To prevent a war between land and sea, Toby must not only find the missing boys, but also prove that the Queen of the Mists was not behind their abduction.

As usual, Seanan McGuire has come through once again. Wonderful story line, great narration, which to me will make or break a book, and really glad to think that the King of Cats is gonna have a chance with Toby...
I would have given this book a 5 star rating, but felt that Toby's character needs a bit of censoring in this one. I had always enjoyed how the author conveyed the thoughts of her characters without going through the gammet of the usual foul language. This was the only downside in the story. Instead of the inventive way she had always used before, I was not well pleased to have to listen to the 'F' word so often.

Please....when is the next book coming? I started out with the free novella, and haven't stopped since until now...These books are wonderfully written, and the narration is some of the best I've listened to, ever!
When you find a series this good, it is torture not knowing when the next book will be out. At least give us a tentative date...there are soooo many possible story lines that can spin off the last book alone, that I hope to see at least 3 or 4 dozen more stories. I can't wait to find out about the 'baby egg', the male lion cub living now at the foundling house, Tera and her wonderful personality...considering she is a 'tower' and not a real person... I love the drama between Lord Nightshade, Sevren and Kaylin Naya...
There has to be the 8th book almost ready to come out...right?

What a lost opportunity. Having seen the previews for the movie, and hearing the accolades, I bought this book to hear a story of triumph out of tragedy, of beauty out of ugliness, only to find uncomparable tragedy and ugliness within the book itself. This book sickened me. It didn't have to, it could have been written with an eye to enlighten the reader without being as uncouth and tasteless as it's subject matter. Again, what a lost opportunity...
