"Unless you are an extreme nerd, stay away."
More plot outside of the virtual world. And Wil Wheaton's ability to pronounce the word poseur correctly. And several other words, actually--that one was just the most egregious.
Sweet Lord, I really thought this was going to be a thriller. But this whole book is essentially a narrated video game. While video games are a blast to play, it is not very entertaining to be read someone's blow by blow of PacMan. Seriously, I am a giant dork, and I almost got into several wrecks from extreme eye-rolling of these characters and yelling at them to go outside. Not to mention some of the plot devices can be seen from a mile away and yet the author is determined to go into extreme detail in their exposition.
Dude needs to learn some IPA if he's going to mispronounce common words. Sheldon's wrath is totally righteous.
The beginning's not bad. The world is very well thought out and the game is very creative. It's just that, from the description, I thought the action was going to take place in both the real and virtual worlds. Not much happens in the real world, and it's very difficult to get behind a story where danger in the virtual world is supposed to be as high stakes as danger in the real world.
A lot can be said for showering and going outside. This book is a cautionary tale for what happens when you don't.
