  • A Secret Rage

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Charlaine Harris
    • Narrated By Johanna Parker

Former New York City model Nickie Callahan is looking forward to the easy life when she moves to the sleepy college town of Knolls, Tennessee. But the women of Knolls are not safe. And as Nickie gets swept up in a string of brutally violent crimes, she must take matters of justice into her own hands.

Tony Aguila says: "Trademark Charlaine Harris"
"Not up to her other work"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you want to read everything written by Charlaine Harris then go for it. But it is not as charming and engrossing as her Sookie Stackhouse or Harper Connelly series, which are the only other books by her I have read. I couldn't put those down while I had to push to finish listening to this one.

Has A Secret Rage turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Not at all.

What about Johanna Parker’s performance did you like?

She was fine, the material was not.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Any additional comments?

I'll keep reading Ms. Harris, but not her earlier works.

  • The Marriage Bargain: Marriage to a Billionaire, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 14 mins)
    • By Jennifer Probst
    • Narrated By Coleen Marlo
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

To save her family home, impulsive bookstore owner Alexa Maria McKenzie casts a love spell. But she never planned on conjuring up her best friend's older brother - the powerful man who once shattered her heart.

Billionaire Nicholas Ryan doesn't believe in marriage, but in order to inherit his father's corporation, he needs a wife and needs one fast. When he discovers his sister's childhood friend is in dire financial straits, he offers Alexa a bold proposition....

    SandyH says: "Funny, heartbreaking"
"Laughed a lot but probably not where intended..."

Narrator does nice job on characters and has lots of enthusiasm, but this story has "dated" written all over it. I just couldn't keep a straight face while listening to it.

But it does have fun characters and a strong female lead.

  • A Discovery of Witches

    • UNABRIDGED (24 hrs and 2 mins)
    • By Deborah Harkness
    • Narrated By Jennifer Ikeda
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

    Tim says: "True Blood PG13"
"A different "take" on supernatural creatures!"

A discovery of Witches was totally unexpected. I've read traditional vampire books, the Sookie series and Twilight. And I've read other supernatural themed books but the relationships and personalities of the different creatures in this book completely engaged my imagination.

This was enhanced by the narrator, who was quite good on the individual character voices. It was easy to distinguish one from another and the accents were recognizable and well done.

The supernatural are referred to as "creatures" comprised of Witches, Demons and Vampires. Harkness sets up a structure for the reader to understand the world they live in as they see it.

Except for just a couple portions that ran to detailed (but necessary) explanations, this moved right along. Yes, it set up the next book in the series but I didn't feel cheated. The story to this point was that enjoyable.

  • Lethal

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Sandra Brown
    • Narrated By Victor Slezak
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When her four year old daughter informs her a sick man is in their yard, Honor Gillette rushes out to help him. But that "sick" man turns out to be Lee Coburn, the man accused of murdering seven people the night before. Dangerous, desperate, and armed, he promises Honor that she and her daughter won't be hurt as long as she does everything he asks. She has no choice but to accept him at his word.

    J. says: "Fantastic!"
"Different for Sandra, but I liked it"
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I was intrigued by the directions the plot took. And I liked the main characters, not cookie cutter.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Narration was good. Once I got into the rhythm of the narrator, my imagination took over and it just flowed.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Very glad I chose to listen to this.

  • Tough Customer: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Sandra Brown
    • Narrated By Victor Slezak
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

From acclaimed best-selling author Sandra Brown, Tough Customer is a heart-pounding tale about obsession and murder, the fragile nature of relationships, and, possibly, second chances.

    J. Gall says: "Really like Sandra Brown"
"Tried, tried and tried again to listen"

Usually I can't wait to put on the headphones and hear what comes next. But I can't find myself caring what happens and I'm a third of the way through. First disappointing novel by Sandra Brown I've encountered and I've read almost all of her stuff.
