Centuries in the past, mankind fought a seemingly unbeatable adversary from sector to sector across the Spiral Arm until the war ground to a standstill and the Enemy withdrew. Believing that they had won, the citizens of the galaxy rebuilt. The Inner Worlds, which had escaped the worst of the war's ravages, became even more insular, while the Rim worlds adopted a free and easy way with law and order. Now, hundreds of years after their withdrawal, the Enemy is back - and this time they'll be satisfied with nothing less than the extinction of the galaxy.

I've downloaded quite a few sci-fi series and I would have to say that so far this is my favorite. The narrative stays fresh and there is enough detail that you can really get involved with the story and no too much detail that it becomes tedious. I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Definitely different from a typical sci-fi book. Loads of very funny dialogue with plenty of technical jargon for the science lovers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The first of the seven books set in the Liaden Universe tells a rich and sweeping story of warring families and star-crossed lovers in a fantastic, other-world galaxy.

I had listened to another series by Lee and Miller and really enjoyed it. I only made it half way through this book before I gave up. It moved at an annoyingly slow pace and seemed to be going nowhere. Maybe it gets better when you get to the next book but I wasn't willing to give it the time.

What did you love best about Live Free or Die?

There was a fair amount of humor throughout the book.

If you’ve listened to books by John Ringo before, how does this one compare?

    Have not.

What about Mark Boyett’s performance did you like?

The speed of the reading and his embodiment of the main character as a former southerner come north.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No extreme reaction.

  • The Housing Boom and Bust

There was no single, dramatic event that set the current financial crisis off. A whole series of very questionable decisions by many people, in many places, over a period of years, built up the pressures that led to a sudden collapse of the housing market and of financial institutions that began to fall like dominoes as a result of investing in securities based on housing prices. This book is designed to unravel the tangled threads of that story.

    "From Opinionated to Informed"
    Overall

Like his other books, Sowell lays out a very concise argument without delving overly deep into the data. That's not to say this book is not well supported, quite the opposite. The only change I would make is to have someone a bit more vibrant narrate. This is pretty heavy material.

  • River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt. Land of the Pharaohs. A kingdom built on gold. A legend shattered by greed. Now the Valley of Kings lies ravaged by war, drained of its lifeblood, as weak men inherit the cherished crown. On the eve of the festival of Osiris, the loyal subjects of the Pharaoh gather in Thebes to pay tribute to their leader.

Exploding with all the passion and rage of a bygone time, River God is a masterpiece of historical writing.

"Slow Starter but well worth it."
    Overall

After the 1st couple hours I was questioning why I bought this book. However I'm very glad however that I continued to listen. The main character despite his self aggrandizing became very endearing. Once the base was developed the story flowed very well and felt much shorter than its actual length. The story spanned a great length of time and I couldn't imagine the author trying to develop the characters in such an effective way with anything shorter. Well done.

  • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: The Millennium Trilogy, Book 1

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

I agree with one of the previous reviewers who said the book was too short. That being said it had wonderful character development and certainly was not your typical thriller. I would definitely recommend the book.

  • Outliers: The Story of Success

In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

S Prabhu says: "Excellent book; well adapted for the audio format"
    "Thought Provoking and Entertaining"
    Overall

Gladwell ferrets out the myths that we would like to be true but always knew weren't that simple. I'd give the book 4.5 stars because the section on education doesn't address how Finish kids manage to score the best globally while at the same time not attending school in the same proportion as the children in the far east.
