  • Get the Life You Want: The Secrets to Quick and Lasting Life Change with Neuro-Linguistic Programming

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Richard Bandler
    • Narrated By Mark Morgann
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When people and therapists alike have a problem they can't fix, they call Richard Bandler because he delivers--often with miraculous results. Hailed as one of the greatest geniuses in the field of personal change, and the father of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Richard Bandler has helped tens of thousands of people around the globe rid themselves of 'incurable' phobias, fears, anxieties, addictions, negative habits, and past traumas often in a single session.

Julia says: "Essential portions are omitted in the audiobook"
    "Bland, banal and outdated"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Well, nothing

What was most disappointing about Richard Bandler’s story?

It seemed he only had one method for achieving success and he repeated it many times with slightly different twists. I confess, I am now definitely not a fan of NLP or, Nothing Left to Ponder or Naturally Lacking Potential. Secular priesthood in my opinion, comforting in the way of warm bath doomed to going tepid.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Mark Morgann?

    Not like this one

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

A return to Audible for something with substance

    Any additional comments?

  • The Brain Mechanic: A Quick and Easy Way to Tune Up the Mind and Maximize Emotional Health

    • UNABRIDGED (2 hrs and 44 mins)
    • By Spencer Lord
    • Narrated By Spencer Lord

You have the incredible power to change the way you think, perceive, and react to stress - for the better - through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT has been known to be widely successful in the treatment of problems associated with anxiety, depression, mood, personality, addiction, weight, and emotions. Until recently, access to CBT was only available through professional therapy. Now with The Brain Mechanic, Spencer Lord delivers a concise, entertaining, and easy-to-use guide that demystifies cognitive behavioral therapy.

Stephen says: "Best Intro To CBT I Know"
    "Simple. It just plain works"
What made the experience of listening to The Brain Mechanic the most enjoyable?

The fact that he grabbed and held on to my attention. The simplicity with which he presents an otherwise complicated process - that we can in fact change the way we think by changing our beliefs. It could be just another book pill to ease our angst but it is not, it actually delivers.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Brain Mechanic?

The notion of writing down thirty of your most dysfunctional or conflicting beliefs with the invitation to just....change them and not just once but as often as necessary until you end up with one that gives you peace of mind.

There is a plethora of stuff out there, enough to drown the most ardent soul searcher and bring us to the verge of being unsure what or who is on the money. For me, this guy is.

  • The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Jonathan Haidt
    • Narrated By George K. Wilson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

This is a book about 10 "Great Ideas". Each chapter is an attempt to savor one idea that has been discovered by several of the world's civilizations - to question it in light of what we now know from scientific research, and to extract from it the lessons that still apply to our modern lives.

David says: "Exceptional synthesis of psychology and philosophy"
    "Brilliant. Wonderful. Intelligent"
Would you listen to The Happiness Hypothesis again? Why?

Yes and I do. Anyone who can call themselves a Jewish atheist is my kind of guy. But seriously, if you are tired of New Age invocations to find yourself as though you'd lost yourself somewhere, then this is for you. Grounded, solid, knowledgable, humorous, compassionate and he doesn't preach or invite you to feel part of a bigger anything. This is a book that should be read (or heard) by anyone, irrespective of whether they feel they have something to learn about the human condition, especially if they think they have nothing to learn about the human condition. And if your religious or ascribe to a force out there, don't read this, you might be tempted to finally accept that it is you.

Who was your favorite character and why?

What does George K. Wilson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hmm, that's a little harder to comment on. I am Australian and he definitely sounds like the American equivalent of someone trying to speak with a plumb in their mouth. At first, I thought he was completely the wrong reader because one had the feeling that he didn't empathise with the content but I got over this and now quite like his voice. Not a big issue.

What insight do you think you’ll apply from The Happiness Hypothesis?

To get on with it, stop fussing so much, stop blaming and tearing what little hair I have left out. To accept my humanity and I mean the fact that I am an animal who walks upright and has being telling himself that what goes on in my head is beyond me. It isn't.

    Any additional comments?

Yes, get this into schools ASAP
