A master craftsman, Don Lark could fix everything except what mattered, his own soul. After tragedy claimed the one thing he loved, he began looking for dilapidated houses to buy, renovate, and resell at a profit, giving these empty shells the second chance at life he denied himself.

    "Great Story"

This was a great story that kept me interested until the very end. It would make a great horror movie. The character development was great. They felt very "real." But I think that a little too much time was spend developing minor characters. I kept waiting for them to become major players and they never were.

    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor", and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of: a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history.

    Branden says: "Phenomenallly detailed..."
    "Great book!"

This was a wonderful book. The characters were well developed and the story kept you captivated. I couldn't wait to go to work so that I could listen some more.

The format did get a little confusing because the story was told in three parts in three different time periods, so you had to pay close attention to what time period they were talking about.

  • Haunted: A Novel

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 59 mins)
    • By James Herbert
    • Narrated By Robert Powell

Three nights of terror at the house called Edbrook. Three nights in which David Ash, there to investigate a haunting, will be the victim of horrifying and maleficent games. Three nights in which he will face the blood-chilling enigma of his own past. Three nights before Edbrook's dreadful secret will be revealed....And the true nightmare will begin.

    Melanie says: "Duh"

It was an ok book, but I knew how it was going to turn out from the beginning pretty much. It was also kind-of hard to follow. It jumped from one place to another and from one time to another. It may have made more sense in its written form but listening to it, I got totally lost several times.

So, if you have nothing better to do, it's an entertaining book, but not really original or surprising.

  • In the Woods

    • UNABRIDGED (20 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Tana French
    • Narrated By Steven Crossley

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.

Dottie B. says: "Very mixed feelings (semi-spoilers included)"
    "Good book"

I was really interested in the book and started to go ahead and give it a rating of 5 until I got about 3/4 through it and everything started to get just too depressing. It could have been a really great story if the writer had finished the second storyline. It had a really great premise but too much was left hanging.
