Field of Blood is a clever and unique but perfectly plausible mystery. It took about 1 1/2 hours of listening to slug through the introduction of characters and get used to the Scottish accent. After that it was quite smooth. The plot was well crafted, and as with all good thrllers keeps just ahead of what you can guess will happen next. The prose combined local dialect with excellent turns of phrase. The characters, particularly the underconfident but determined protagnoist, were a delight. The subplots and development of the minor characters were interesting and satisfying as well.
This book starts slow but builds quickly, and the listener who sticks with it you will be amply rewarded.
I bought this title based on enthusiastic, almost cultist reviews and its place on the bestseller lists. I found the plot tendentious and trite, and the protagonist both weak and unattractive. I quit about 1/2 way through. I later learned of a number of others who greatly disliked this book. So, before purchasing, be aware that as great as some are calling it, there are a lot of folks who not only dislike it, but think it's junk.
I listen to audio books during exercise and while driving. This book is structured in a complex way, jumps back and forth in time, and has too many characters to count let alone remember. While I respect the high purposes of the author and the prose, such a book is impossible for me to ingest in audio format. Rather, I would recommend buying the book so you can flip back through the pages for reference.
I love historical fiction, and this is the very best of its genre, a dramatic story splendidly told. Any American who listens to this will be chilled in the spine, both figuratively and empathically, as Fischer describes the incredible feats of perseverence and courage of the foot soldiers. But the greatest thrill is to hear of the indefatigable George Washington, who in the bleakest personal and national moment, had the brilliance and dash to conceive and lead the desperate, freezing but still faithful men in this remarkable and heroic enterprise. If you ever needed to know why he was the father of our country, this account gives ample justification.
