Hearing Gene's life in Gene's own voice - the good, the bad, and the cuddly.
This is the American Dream that came true - A boy from far away, but with a dream - what a ride, what a battle, yet Gene is an artist with a vision and a passion who would not let anyone stop him from giving it his best shot... something all artist's need to hear.
Honesty. Sincerity. Passion, and emotion from the highest highs to the lowest lows. It's all there in his voice. Made it a special honor to hear it in his own voice.... many great artist's have passed on with out us hearing this kind of very personal story telling of their life. Quite special.
His honesty was a bit shocking, and yet refreshing. I enjoyed hearing that he has the ability to look at himself and say he had no idea if what he was doing was going to work or not. You hear the terrible fight it was to go on at some turns in the band's career, and you know a little bit more about why some rock n' roll bands can go on, and others (or most) don't. It takes a lot of heart. Behind the make-up, the black leather and studs, the dragon books, the bat wings, the vomited blood, and the breathing fire - behind the Rock N' Roll Iconic Demon that rocked every teenaged boy's day-dreams in the 70's, you hear the man with all his fears, and foibles. Somethings about Gene are amazingly inspirational. Somethings about Gene are very strange. However, in the end, I love this guy because he unashamedly "Let His Freak Flag Fly!"
Much better than I thought it would be. Talks about things, that even as a life long KISS fan I never heard about or knew.Strange urban legends and myths about the band. I understand a lot more about what it took, and I really have so much more respect for Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley now. They changed Pop Culture. They are as important as Paul & John.
I was afraid to listen at first, I kept thinking the Rock N' Roll Demon icon would not be who I wanted him to be... and he wasn't, not really. However, who Gene is - is someone very talented, passionate, afraid (I was going to say fearless, but Gene talks about being afraid, many, many times, and yet going through his fear, so he wasn't fearless, - he faced his fears), and... he's not a genius, but he is a smart guy. Great book. Never a dull moment. What a roller coaster ride of a life! Gene and Paul really changed rock and roll forever, made a huge earth shaking noise in pop-culture, and did something unique and fascinating and oh so damned entertaining. Gene Simmons RAWKS!
Oh yes! These are great action tales with a twist toward the dark! It's Earl Flynn meets Cthulhu! While savage Conan was the birth of "Swords and Sorcery", grim Kane is the birth of "Swashbuckling vs Supernatural"! Leaves you wanting more!
Kane smacks of Robert E. Howard's other horror tales, but with a great dashing and dark caped crusader as the leading man.
Paul was good and clear and deep, and brought forth all the male bravado and creepy chills required.
Wha? That's the dumbest question from an audible review yet! Who wrote this silly thing?
A great book, and a wonder flu listen. I was promoted to go out and watch the recent film of Soloman Kane, and they did a fine job, great monsters, beautiful art direction, fine acting, however, the film got a tad too grim I thought. When Robert E.Howard's hero beat evil, you felt completely validated by justice and righteousness. The movie dips a bit down the sado-masacistic scale for me, and you end up feeling like you need a good wash.
Great story telling - constant surprise twists. Ninjas and samurai in a tale so exquisite & full of action & high emotion, building to a climax nearly unbearable in it's intensity. This is the tale of mystic ninja warriors I have waited to hear snce I was a young martial art student... a life time ago.
Sixteen-year-old Takeo - his slow discovery of his powers and heritage, intelligence, and passions for love and sex and revenge- everything ins in this tale..and I mean everything!
The ending is amazing - it just builds and builds in drama and action, both physical and emotional till I was stopped at my art, gasping, waiting to hear what was gonna' happen next!
I did both! Plus, I was amazed at the skill of the writer Lian Hearn bringing in so many elements of suspense, passion, and mystic powers and martial skill... it's the book I always wanted to read / hear since I studied martial arts so intensely as a young man.
This book takes to the brink of sanity in it's build of anticipation, thirst for revenge, and such beautiful depiction's of obsession & love... it's like poetry. What made me re-wind several time to get all the slight nuances of what was going on in this complex yet gripping tale, was it's great ability to swing from one extreme to another, and have it all so seamlessly fit. What made me re-listen to a scene three times to make sure I got it right was the brief but so gorgeously touching so tastefully written was the homosexual love of the young monk for our hero near the end of the book - after we've been through so much blood, broken hearts, burning revenge, heterosexual love and passion, mystical ninja powers of deception , fighting and killing, then, a really touching moment of a young monks's adoration, and love, for our hero as he is blood soaked from his so delicious rage filled revenge, yet still, sadly in need of some real kind tenderness- and he finally gets it form this most wondrous turn of the tale near the end... wow. That shows Lian Hearn - the highly skilled story teller at the height of his craft. This life long martial artist got moist eyed and shaken to the roots of my understanding of "love" in a tale I thought was about "revenge". Bravo Lian Hearn! I bout the second book instantly!
It was a great, scary, horror story written by one of the best story tellers of our time: Guillermo Del Toro, and read by one of my favorite character actors: Ron Perlman.
There are many, and Guillermo Del Toro slowly turns over cards like a carnival Fortune Teller, each card more frightening and darkly illustrated than the last... but... the first time a naked dead body walks, and attacks, in times square, with it's mouth full of vampire alien leech tentacles - that was a good moment!
I have not, but I will hunt them out now! I LOVE Ron Perlman. His deep voice is a special effect all by itself! He never strains to create a silly female voice, but uses all his acting skill - I can only feel he is leaning a bit towards Bela Lugosi in this frightful tale of Nosferatu! It's like being read a bed-time story by Hellboy, or Hannibal Chau! Ron's deep voice rumbling out this horror-story brings with it all the depth of a dark and stormy night glowing with an EC comic read by flash-light under the covers! What a treat!
Nosferatu Take New York! ...or (Where is Blade When you Need Him!)
This audio book is really a special gift to us horror-fans! Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, these wonderful actors are all gone. However, Ron Perlman, he is here, and we are so lucky to have him willing to sit with us... maybe in a midnight darkened room, perhaps by a low flickering fire, or a ghostly glowing candle, and read to us... this delicious dreadful delight. He is one of the few living actors of such caliber to deliver to us this brilliant tale by one of the best horror and pulp writers of our time: Guillermo Del Toro with such perfection! I cannot wait to hear the rest of the books! Oh...so great! This is a rare treasure, indeed! I am so excited I found it, and now, how nice would it be to have Mr. Perlman read a few HELLBOY books? Hmmmmm?
It's so well written. The Characters so well thought out. The ideas so smart.
Jake. The Heavy, gravity Spiker - the ultimate pulp adventure hero.
Smarts. Really amazing ideas that set you back on your heels they are so fresh and new.
It's climax is nearly impossible to hear it's so intensely good!
This is the BEST trilogy since Lord of the Rings. It's pulp fiction, taken to it's very best possible limits. Maybe the middle book is my favorite. But Bronson writes his bad guys and good guys with the same deep love and understanding. You feel for them all, cheer for them all, and cringe from the monstrous evil put down in literature since Pulp horror master H.P.Lovecraft wrote about Cthulhu and the great old ones. You love pulp? You love Lovecraft? you got to read / listen to this!
Vincent Van Gogh - he was so ahead of his time.
This is what makes life worth it. Culture and Art.
I listen to it over and over. A joy to hear. Still, I don't understand why Hockeny was so great.
If you liked Pacific Rim the film, this book is all the missing pieces and juicy details you want to know about the story in PR. Deeper knowledge of the Kaiju, where they come from, who made them...and why...! Each character is more fully explained. A great addition of so many more story details!
Wow, every character jumps up to life... all with more depth. I love the love / hate Raleigh has with the whole world now. I love the two scientists. I think theyb really care for each other behind their constant fighting. I LOVED Hannibal Chau the pirate in the black market, though, "Ron Pearlman" cannot be surpassed by any reader, no matter how good. However, this character so enthralled me, I may get my missing tooth replaced with a gold one.
OK, sorry, this might be a "raciest" thing to say, but I will say it: I love the cool British toughness of Stacker Pentecost - and I was amazed that in the book it doesn't say he is black. While, in the film, black actor "Idris Elba" plays him to such perfection, I could not think of him as any one else. I went back and re-watched his performance in the film, and marveled at all the extra depth I got out of his character from the detail in the book, and his really wonderful performance. The best line in the book / movie: "First, Don't you ever touch me. Second, Don't you EVER touch me!" - the book and movie together enhanced my enjoyment of his masterful acting performance!
Really amazing...had to think sooo many pepole's voices came from so few. You get lost in the illusion.
Many... I got a LOT more emotional context of the characters. I got teared up at the end. Some go to their deaths, a fitting hero's end.
This book added so much more to a already fantastic movie! I would have this audio book (or even paper book) be a strongly urged listen /read after seeing the film - if you liked the film - you will LOVE the book. It fill in all the gaps...gives you all the history... names more monsters, tells U many things about the world you didn't know, really develops a whole new tragic and heroic world. I REALLY REALLY REALLY wish it was the first book in a trilogy!
A better paced story... this seems to crawl and ramble nowhere in particular.
That Peter Strab wrote it. I always seem to have a problem with his writing. But a friend told me this was about a character who had dealings with H. P. Lovecraft like beings...and I LOVE H. P. Lovecraft. Thought I'd give Peter one more try. But, I'm still fighting my way through Peter's weird writing style to figure out just what the heck is gong on.
The reader was very good. Very dramatic.
I do so very much LOVE all the "Eldar Gods" mythos stuff. I dig all the under dog becomes the razor clawed leather winged destroyer of the human race.
Perhaps I will give it another try...
Vintage, supernatural, acton-adventure = PULP!
I could say "Spell Bound" but that's the 2nd book in this series. I gues I'll say 7 wonders. An Action/super hero novel seen from an adult view point, written with wit, smarts, and no fear of hard core action scenes.
Brilliant reading, acting really. He a whole cast in one man (both women and men with many accents and ages) and I can paint while "reading" books... my two favorite things to do!
Oh yes, if I could. This was a near perfect book. I liked that is was LONG... so much good story!
I love so many things about this book. It's amazing how many things on my strange check list of "What I would want to read about in a book" that this book got right! 1.) I Love the time period. 2.) I love the magical powers that were used with like super powers. 3.) I love the very well researched historical tid-bits and frame work. 4.) I love the action-heavy scenes that go on and on in great exciting detail. 5.) I love the sense of humor, yet the very serious situations and violence. You never feel the material is being taken too lightly, as a joke. No, it's a deadly serious situation, with real people with a lot of real skills and powers who rely on their own dry wit and humor to make it through crazy things and come out sane. And 6.) Magic & Monsters! Magic powers & Monsters well thought out. Smart writing. 7.) Bad guys with real reasons behind what they do and why they are doing it. 8.) A great big ending... I love a pulp/action/adventure writer who can bring up the story to a bigger and bigger earth shaking climax! Larry Correia is just such a writer. He's good... he's really damned good. He's GREAT at writing PULP! I love good pulp, and I hope Larry Correia writes a whole mess more! Bravo!
Larry Correia is a brilliant writer. He takes horror and action and creates the story you always wanted to hear. It's scary, heart-pounding FUN. Gory? yep. Creepy? Yep. But... FUN!
It's unique twist on just about EVERY usual twist in a monster tale.
Great reader - he brings a whole cast of people men and women all from one man.
There are real monsters in the world. And there are also real big guns!
Larry Correia is a brilliant writer. Did I say brilliant? No. Great Googaly Moogaly Man! I meant SUPER-MEGA-AWESOME-BRILLIANT!!! This guy can freakin' WRITE! His book is a amusement park ride that straps you in and takes you whipping through his alternate reality (one where monsters are REAL) with all the screaming thrills of the best Ghost Train ride any kid has ever thrown up on! Larry Correia mixes horror and action into a perfect high octane cocktail that will blow your creature craving mind! He's Stephen King on steroids. He's Clive Barker with a sledge hammer of frightful high energy fight scenes that are not afraid to go on for as long as they want, and leave you breathless and sweating as if you just had gotten , all wobbily legged, off of the most extreme ride in the park. Whew! Now... let's go on it again! Where's the next book in this series? And let's all hope Larry Correia is a brilliant writer who KEEPS ON WRITING! WRITE LARRY WRITE!!
Yes. It's enthralling. Carry Correia is a fantasticly talented writer.
Larry Correia is a flood of smart fresh ideas. Some so strange they made the hair stand up on my head. Utterly brilliant!
He has a great talnt to do many voices. Seemed like a whole cast. Male and female.
YES! It's amazing! I never wanted it to end.
This is the second book. Hard Magic is #1. This series is so darned good I can only hope Larry Correia keeps writing ... for a very long time. His alternate reality starts in the 1900's and continues through WW1 with the Kaiser raising a army of the undead. That is a mere background detail...and then the book really gets exciting! I have not read a story this fresh and this thrilling in so long it made me marvel at the magic that a good book can be this entertaining. The first book is great. The second book is tremendous!! There are ideas so wild and original that it made my hair stand on end. Larry Correia is one of the very VERY best, smartest, and well researched fantasy writers of our time. I bow to his towering imagination. He is a flood of new ideas, and creates a great retro/pulp story. It all unfolds in a beautifully detailed world so real that it lives and breaths with life and heart pounding action. Each book adding rich detail to a ever changing and growing reality with stranger and adding more clever sub plots and characters. Characters? There are NO flat characters - everyone has depth, a history, and growing story arches in a world so much like ours, yet so utter fantastic - it's hypnotic and enthralling. You cheat yourself out of the read of a life time if you do not read these books. I hope Larry keeps going. Keeps writing. Talent this good is very rare... far too rare. I cannot say of any fantasy writer as good as he is right now. And I think he's getting better.
