  • Trick of the Dark

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 10 mins)
    • By Val McDermid

In Trick of the Dark, forensic psychiatrist Charlotte Flint is in desperate need of a distraction after her testimony in a high-profile case comes under fire, threatening her career. Enter Dr. Corinna Newsam, an old professor of Charlotte’s who is convinced her son-in-law was murdered by her daughter’s new lover.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I have no real feelings about this book. I have always loved McDermid mystery books and would have purchased this anyway, based on past experience. It was somewhat boring and disappointing this time, as I always look forward to her newest work. Based on this experience , I will think twice about purchasing her next title.

If you’ve listened to books by Val McDermid before, how does this one compare?

The characters in this book were not at all sympathetic to me. It seems artificial in that there are no main male characters. It is heavily weighted with lesbian characters and not well balanced with other viewpoints or storylines. Past books had much better plots.

    Which scene was your favorite?

    Can't remember any favorite.

Was Trick of the Dark worth the listening time?

Would not recommend this whole heartedly.

  • Princes of Ireland: The Dublin Saga

    • UNABRIDGED (25 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Edward Rutherfurd
    • Narrated By Richard Matthews

The saga begins in tribal, pre-Christian Ireland during the reign of the fierce and mighty High Kings at Tara, with the tale of two lovers whose travails cleverly echo the ancient Celtic legend of Cuchulainn. From that stirring beginning, Rutherfurd takes the reader on a powerfully imagined journey through the centuries. Through the interlocking stories of a memorable cast of characters we see Ireland through the lens of its greatest city.

If you could sum up Princes of Ireland in three words, what would they be?

    Fascinating historical saga.

    Any additional comments?

After visiting Ireland recently, I downloaded this book to recall the wonderful places and to learn some of the background of the beautiful locations and landmarks. Had originally read this book when it first came out, as I love the development format that Rutherford uses for his novels. It was a great read, but LISTENING to the stories again made my travel experience much more meaningful. When traveling in a limited timeframe, it is hard to absorb all of the surrounding history, and having all of this added information was so helpful. Will look forward to hearing the sequel and also to a return visit to Ireland!
