James Hynes is the author of three New York Times Notable Books of the Year. That same publication praises Kings of Infinite Space as “unspeakably funny!” This offbeat novel satirizes an experience ubiquitous to modern times—office life. With a defeated sigh, ex-college professor Paul Trilby faces the downward spiral that is his existence. After his wife and three subsequent girlfriends dump him, and he loses just as many jobs, he’s sure he’s a pawn in some vast conspiracy.

What disappointed you about Kings of Infinite Space?

I have read all oh Hynes' academic themed novels, and lived them. This one is pointless and borring. I couldn't finish it.

Would you recommend The Faculty Club to your friends? Why or why not?

It was really painful to listen to the author trying to demonstrate that the characters were so very smart, because what they were saying was so very dumb. The kept coming up for me during the entire book. Also, I found the main character pretty unsympathetic.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Would you try another book from Diana Gabaldon and/or Davina Porter?

    No

What was most disappointing about Diana Gabaldon’s story?

Time travel and Scotland are merely deep background for what is really a romance novel. Mostly it is a fantasy about a woman in a boring, but adequate marriage who travels back in time (never explained how - she is just transported through standing stones. Somehow). Once there, she gets a hot Scottish guy. There was just too much eroticized violence for me. Again and and again, he is flogged or tortured in a salacious manner, in scenes that are long and tedious. I am not above this sort of thing, really, but this whole book was just so bloody boring. The thing I probably hated the most was that he actually beats her with a belt in a fairly long scene, and she comes to believe that she deserved it. It's not an S/M scene, just a spouse abuse scene. II really hated this book. No idea why it is so popular.
