I'm a sucker for a sequel to a good story, that's probably why I picked this one. The Book One subtitle infers that if I like this one, I can try the next.
Totally misleading. This title just stops, with a contrived cliff-hanger. Not a complete Book, One or otherwise.
On the plus side, the story is engaging and actually very original, which only contributes to the frustration at the end.
I have to admit, I'm intrigued, not only to find out what happens next, but to find out how this can be only one-third of the story, it seems so close to completion...
Some other reviews have mentioned the veiled Christian dogma, but unless it is coming in later volumes, so far so good. Or should I say, Good and Evil?

Usually, if a book or movie or piece of art leaves you with questions, it's a good thing. It's one of the primary functions of art.
This book will leave you with questions, but not for the usual reasons.
The first question is "Why?"...as in, "why did Stephen King feel the need to write this book?" Didn't he retire?
Another question is, "hasn't this been done before? Only better...?" The answer is yes. SK did it a long time ago with The Stand. And he did it right, one of my all-time favorite reads. This story is like The Stand, but without all those really good parts, and without characters you care about.
Typically with a good story, I can't wait to find out what happens next, and this author is traditionally one of the best. He keeps my attention, and I am always in anticipation of the next event. But with this story, I only find myself asking "who cares?".
About the reader, I've listened to other titles, and he's good. He's good here, but the production quality is terrible. There are severe volume shifts, and obvious edits that sound like overdubs. Very disappointing for a "best-seller" release.
I'd recommend this title only for die-hard SK fans that can't get enough. Those fans may find something to appreciate here, but new listeners may be turned off for good. Audible has many really good stories by Stephen King, including the Dark Tower series, The Talisman, The Shining and many others that would be a better investment of time.

Not my first Spider Robinson experience, and even better than I expected. The story is saturated with colorful characters in one amusing situation after another. Never a dull moment.
I had no idea this title is one of the latest in a "Callahan" series, it is a complete and independent story. I would recommend starting at the beginning, which is where I'll be going next, but it isn't necessary.
I think it's worth mentioning that the author is not subtle in his tribute to Robert A. Heinlein, as well as John D. MacDonald and possibly Robert Asprin. Which is a good thing!

The story disappointed me because things always seem too convenient and coincidental. I guess I'm just used to a little more hardship and struggle for this to appear realistic.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story, and was able to stay interested, but I guess it just was not _compelling_.
I also found the reader to be a bit dull, probably a good choice for a classic, but I think the story would benefit from a different reader, which are available here.

Excellent way to spend a few hours, good story, great characters, and unexpectedly laugh-out-loud funny several times. Wait 'til you meet Lucas, and you'll see what I mean...

I have no idea how I ended up with this title in my library, but I sure am glad I did. I'm more of a Stephen King, Louis Lamour, H.G. Wells, Robert Jordan type of reader, and this book is NONE of those.
What this book is, is a wonderful and moving story of a family dealing with terminal illness. Which doesn't sound appealing perhaps, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The story is excellent, but the way the story is told makes all the difference, from the perspective of each character individually, so you get a variety of viewpoints of the same events.
And the narration is equally good, with different actors to tell each characters part. Not really dramatized, but with just the right emphasis.
The story is so good, it inspired me to log on just to write my first review!
Fine work from the author, the actors, and the director.
