When the travel bug bit, J. Maarten Troost took on the world's most populous and intriguing nation. As Troost relates his gonzo adventure - dodging deadly drivers in Shanghai, eating yak in Tibet, deciphering restaurant menus (offering local favorites such as cattle penis with garlic), and visiting with Chairman Mao (still dead) - he reveals a vast, complex country on the brink of transformation that will soon shape the way we all work, live, and think.

When Niccolo's wealthy older wife dies in Bruges, he finds himself - at the age of 21 - in the dual role of prosperous merchant and sought-after military strategist. Niccolo's powerful private army is coveted by two warring rulers: steely Carlotta, Queen of Jerusalem, Cyprus and Armenia; and her lethally charming, illegitimate brother, James, who is determined to wrest the kingdom from his detested sister. But Niccolo's suave demeanour and physical prowess and his ability to turn a profit as well as a battle, attracts dangerous lovers.

    Story

The Niccolo Series by Dorothy Dunnett is my all time favorite and I reread all 7 books every 2 or 3 years. I longed to hear her words on tape---FINALLY it happened! The narrator of the first two books was acceptable, although I wished for a better voice for Claus as I had imagined him. Nevertheless I enjoyed the first 2 books of the series. I read the reviews of Christopher Kay before I purchased Vol. 3 and thought, this voice can't possibly be as bad as the reviewers say----Well, to my surprise and dismay the narration was even WORSE. So bad in fact that despite the fact that I had been reading the books at home and following along on the recordings in the car (Dunnett's stories are so complex) I stopped in the middle of this volume. Please, Please Please Audible-throw out all these Christopher Kay recordings and either go back to the narrator of the first two books, or find someone like George Guidall who is excellent.
I have given an overall rating of only 2 stars because the horrible accents the narrator uses makes this recording unacceptable. The story still stands as an all time favorite.

Trevor Corson takes us behind the scenes at America's first sushi-chef training academy, as eager novices strive to master the elusive art of cooking without cooking. He delves into the biology and natural history of the edible creatures of the sea, and tells the fascinating story of an Indo-Chinese meal reinvented in 19th-century Tokyo as a cheap fast food.

Who knew there was so much to know about sushi? While the trite story about the personal life of the main character is distracting, the overall information and history about sushi outweighs those negatives. You'll never look at raw fish the same!

It is 1836. Europe is modernizing, and the Ottoman Empire must follow suit. But just before the sultan announces sweeping changes, a wave of murders threatens the balance of power in his court. Who is behind them? Only one intelligence agent can be trusted to find out: Yashim Togalu, a man both brilliant and near-invisible in this world. You see, Yashim is a eunuch.

Had read a book by the author and liked it very much but could not finish listening to this because of the narration. Will be careful to not buy anything else by this narrator. The voice is melodramatic and at times insipid; all in all, very annoying, ruining a good historical fiction.

Read a lot of historical fiction. This was much better than other reviews led me to believe. But tried this any way. This story based in fact and interesting regarding a piece of Italian history of which I wasn't aware -the Norman influence in southern Italy. Good writing; good vocabulary-better than alot of historical fiction (HATE those "romance" historical fiction novels) Will read/listen to next two vol. of this as well as other writings by Jack Ludow. Similar to Barnard Cromwell-just as well written, but character development not quite as strong.

After two grueling years on the island of Tarawa, Troost was in no hurry to return to the South Pacific until he began to feel remarkably out of place in modern America. He knew it was time to set off again for parts unknown. Here he tells the story of his time on Vanuatu, a cluster of islands where he struggles against typhoons, earthquakes, and giant centipedes but finds himself swept up in the laid-back, clothing-optional lifestyle of the islanders.
