Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator - I did not enjoy Meryl Streep's narration, even though I love her as an actress. I found the tone nagging and irritating.

What could Nora Ephron have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The story is too inwardly focused and the repetition of the self-talk became boring.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was high pitched and sounded more like nagging than reading a book

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No

Mary Ingles was 23, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months they held her captive. But nothing could imprison her spirit. With the rushing Ohio River as her guide, Mary Ingles walked one thousand miles through an untamed wilderness no white woman had ever seen.

I enjoyed the book, even though I skipped through some of the long-winded descriptions of the journey back home in the middle of the book. I realize that the author had to add these descriptions to to emphasize how difficult and challenging the journey must have been, but personally I felt that it did not add much to the story.
