Russian literature exudes an atmosphere of mysticism, which is said to be a natural result of the simplicity of her people. Often, instead of being "about" anything, Russian stories sometimes seem to be the "thing" in itself. Be this as it may, it is an undeniable fact that with hardly any portent of future greatness to come, Russian literature suddenly sprang fully developed into existence in the 19th century.

Excellent narration matched to timeless short stories. Russia is a cold and different world from America and these shorts are a good, yet tiny, introduction to the world of Russian literature.

This is the true-crime bestseller that was the basis for Martin Scorsese’s film masterpiece GoodFellas, which brought to life the violence, the excess, the families, the wives and girlfriends, the drugs, the payoffs, the paybacks, the jail time, and the Feds... with Henry Hill’s crackling narration drawn straight out of Wiseguy and overseeing all the unforgettable action.

Read it and experience the secret life inside the mob - from one who’s lived it. Now with an introduction by Martin Scorcese.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

its already been done and it was "Goodfellas"

    Any additional comments?

If I read the unabridged book first I'm sure I'd feel different but this abridged version of the book just isn't enough. Every once in awhile the movie is better then the book and this is one of those times . don't waste your time or credits.

All that being considered it still is a great true story and amply performed by the readers. I recall it was read by mail and female cast not just by Pileggi

On February 14, 1989, Valentine's Day, Salman Rushdie was telephoned by a BBC journalist and told that he had been "sentenced to death" by the Ayatollah Khomeini. For the first time he heard the word fatwa. His crime? To have written a novel called The Satanic Verses, which was accused of being "against Islam, the Prophet and the Quran". So begins the extraordinary story of how a writer was forced underground, moving from house to house, with the constant presence of a police protection team.

I feel horrible giving 1 star ratings to someones true life story. It just bored me to death. I'm sure other people will enjoy the listen but it was not for me. I listened to it 3x fast and still couldn’t find one section of the book that stimulated me. I have less then ¼ to go but I just don’t think I can bare it.That being said I bought this in part to support Salman Rushdie. I have a tremendous amount sympathy and respect for him and his books, just not this one.
