I drive for a living, spending up to 13 hours a day in a truck. Commercial and satellite radio bore me - audio books are my salvation

Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past never truly fades away. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all.

What made the experience of listening to Stay Close the most enjoyable?

The story was fluid and kept me engaged throughout. Scott Brick's performance was, as always, rock solid.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Scott Brick is one of my "go-to" narrators when I'm aimless and looking for something new to listen to. I enjoy his work, his ability to truly differentiate characters and his seamless transitions. He can take a mediocre work and make it good - when given a great story, he makes it epic.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Although a little slow to start, with a 13 hour shift in front of me, the book didn't make it to Day-2 - I devour audio books, and this one has made the rare jump to the list of books I'll listen to more than once.

  • Port Mortuary: A Scarpetta Novel

In this fast-paced story, a treacherous path from Scarpetta's past merges with the high tech highway she now finds herself on. We travel back to the beginning of her professional career, when she enlisted in the Air Force to pay off her medical school debt and found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of what seemed to be vicious, racially motivated hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa.

As a professional driver, I use audio books for my entertainment, as commercial radio (and even satellite radio now) just bore me. I've now tried three different times to "get into" this book, and just can't do it.

I'm sure there's a reason why Kate Burton has taken over reading the series. I'm sure that Kate Burton is a good performer, but her reading here is too monotonous, with little to any change in tone and inflection to differentiate characters (it actually gets to the point where you can't tell who's supposed to be speaking). Uninspired is the best I can say about this performance.

Kay Scarpetta's character has gone to a dark place (fine) but the book gets tediously over-melodramatic and musical track added to the reading is annoying at best.

If you *have* to get this book because it's a new Scarpetta, wait for your local library to get an audio version and borrow it. This is this *first* time I've been disappointed with a purchase from Audible (and I've been a customer for a number of years now).
