Journalist Rick Bragg has built a soaring monument to the grandfather he never knew, and in the process created a powerfully intimate piece of American history as it was experienced by the working people of the deep South, a glorious record of a life of character, tenacity and indomitable joy, and an unforgettable tribute to a vanishing culture.

a historical look at one families history - along with the way the economics and history of the era and area affected them - It was also interesting to hear the musings of the author relating his relatives experiences in the past to his own current activities.

A failed prodigy and child of divorce, Francesca Dunn is also an adolescent like any other, trying to find her identity and figure out her place in the world. One night, Chester, a visionary homeless man (or an insane one, depending on your point of view) "sees" Francesca hovering over the river, bathed in celestial light. Days later, as Francesca serves meals to the needy in a local cafi, Chester falls to his knees before her in adoration.

Michelle says: "Loved the story, wished for one narrator"
"OK - but kind of predictable"

Our Lady of the Forest by Gutterson is on same theme, but better writing.

In his most challenging journey to date, Palin tackles the Himalayas, the greatest mountain range on earth. It is a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1,800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. Penetrated but never conquered, it remains the world's most majestic natural barrier, a magnificent wilderness that shapes the history and politics of Asia to this day.

I enjoyed this book once I found the website to follow along. His descriptions are so good - but the pictures and maps on the website really help to follow along.

In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

Neal says: "Funny and Fascinating, A Wonderful Book"
"I am surprised I liked it!"
    Overall

I kept thinking the main character was kind of wierd, but at the same time I really liked listening to his thoughts. Without treating them as victims - it gives a unique point of view on how mental illness affects family members.I did not want it to end - and when it did I wanted a sequal.

Two sisters, small-town Ontario, 1934. Canadian author Richard Wright tells their story, from the ordinary to the extraoridinary with an eye for the commonplace and poignant sense of the larger undercurrents that change people's lives.

    L says: "charming intimate refreshing"
"a fresh view of women in the 1930's"
    Overall

It seems in so many stories of women in the 1930's they are the downtrodden of the depression of America. This is a different view - for both Clara and her sister. Something new and different. I enjoyed the whole book

Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the first and last time since his stroke.

Nicholas says: "Not my favorite Koontz, but still engaging..."
"Fun - but kind of corney"
    Overall

I liked this ok.However, the strange occupations, unusual family members, whacky statements that in the beginning were quirky and funny soon became corney and dumb.Though I usually like the long version, this one I would suggest abbriged. Not the best by this author.
