  • Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 36 mins)
    • By Brené Brown
    • Narrated By Karen White

Researcher and thought leader Dr. Brené Brown offers a powerful new vision that encourages us to dare greatly: to embrace vulnerability and imperfection, to live wholeheartedly, and to courageously engage in our lives. In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on 12 years of research, her book argues that vulnerability is not weakness but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection.

Radiance says: "Love Brene Brown, didn't like the narrator"
"You'll get out of this book what you put into it"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. I've actually already recommended it to 5 friends, and will probably recommend it to many more.

There are so many uncomfortable or taboo topics in our society that we don't really understand, and this book does an amazing job at showcasing some of those.

I cried a number of times during this book because Brené was able to capture feelings that I had never been able to identify. It was incredibly moving.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had to take a lot of breaks from reading it so that I could allow her message to really sink in and so that I could find ways to apply it to my life.

    Any additional comments?

This book is phenomenal and every day I find new ways that I can apply things I learned from it. Granted, I didn't "enjoy" it the way I enjoy reading fiction, because parts of it make the reader uncomfortable... which is the point. I will soon be reading the rest of Brené Brown's books because she has an incredible insight into humanity.

  • The Paradox of Choice: Why More is Less

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 6 mins)
    • By Barry Schwartz
    • Narrated By Ken Kliban
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

By synthesizing current research in the social sciences, Schwartz makes the counterintuitive case that eliminating choices can greatly reduce the stress, anxiety, and busyness of our lives. He offers eleven practical steps on how to limit choices to a manageable number, have the discipline to focus on the important ones and ignore the rest, and ultimately derive greater satisfaction from the choices you have to make.

Darwin8u says: "The Tyranny of Pop Economics"
    "Good information, distracting narration"
Would you be willing to try another one of Ken Kliban’s performances?

Not likely. He had an almost forced steady rate of speech and he seemed to place too much emphasis/stress in the "ity" for words such as "opportunity" and "possibility" which was rather distracting once I noticed it.

    Any additional comments?

I will likely go back and review parts of this book again, but I would get a physical copy because of the narration.

  • The Secret Adversary: A Tommy and Tuppence Mystery

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 39 mins)
    • By Agatha Christie
    • Narrated By Hugh Fraser
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Tommy and Tuppence, two people flat broke and out of work, are restless for excitement. They embark on a daring business scheme - Young Adventurers Ltd. - "willing to do anything, go anywhere." But their first assignment, for the sinister Mr. Whittington, draws them into a diabolical, political conspiracy. Under the eye of the elusive, ruthless Mr. Brown, they find themselves plunged into more danger than they ever imagined.

Stephen says: "A wonderful listen with marvelous characters"
"A wonderful listen with marvelous characters"
Where does The Secret Adversary rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

While Tommy and Tuppence aren't as well known as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, in some ways I enjoy them more. Christie injects them with levity and humor that seems to be missing with her more celebrated detectives.

Hugh Fraser does a marvelous job, as always, with his narration.

  • Mindset: The New Psychology of Success

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Carol Dweck
    • Narrated By Marguerite Gavin
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Mindset is one of those rare audio books that can help you make positive changes in your life and at the same time see the world in a new way. A leading expert in motivation and personality psychology, Carol Dweck has discovered in more than 20 years of research that our mindset is not a minor personality quirk: it creates our whole mental world. It explains how we become optimistic or pessimistic. It shapes our goals, our attitude toward work, and ultimately predicts whether or not we will fulfull our potential.

Peter says: "Gems sparsely scattered throughout a desert"
    "Remarkable insights (Tedious narration)"
If you could sum up Mindset in three words, what would they be?

    Perceptions define reality

How could the performance have been better?

The author does the introduction, which is wonderful. I wish she would have read the entire book. The narrator speaks with a steady rate and a professionalism that almost seems forced.

    Any additional comments?

While the narration leaves much to be desired, the actual content of the book holds some truly remarkable insights into how people define their own realities. Since reading it, I've found myself facing frustrating situations which have become completely reversed after adjusting my mindset.
