I'm still sort of in shock. First, thank you Recorded Books and audible for getting this up same day as the national release.
Now, OMG! The Andrews team have REALLY upped the bar on this series and it was at the top of it's genre going in. We have LOTS of new information, some answers and a few very interesting new characters. The mythology gets more intense and complicated. This story is a departure from the "case" based plots we've had up till now. It pretty much hits the ground as adventure from page one. You're going to see nearly all the favorite secondary cast. This series just gets more amazing each book.
Hint though, be sure to have tissues handy, it's a hard ride and there are some bad things that happen.
As always Renee Raudman does a perfect job.
I waited forever to get this book in audio. I have all the other Iron Seas in audio. I'm very sad to say, while the story was on par with the others in the series, I really didn't like the reader. She uses a very *baby-like* voice for Zenobia. For me it really didn't fit the character at all. I don't think Alison Larkin would be wrong for another type of character or book but for this book I feel strongly this was a bad pairing.
I like Jenn Bennett's Arcadia Bell series very much. So I'm sad to report I didn't like this book very much. The writing is fine, I just felt the plot was a bit thin, a good portion of the book is really just about getting the leads together in bed. I think some people like the romance to be the *A* story line, for me, I prefer the romance to be in the background. I like the idea of the world, I just wish there had been more focus on that.
Amy Landon did a fine job reading.
I love this series, but this book was a huge disappointment. This is usually a author that is a drop everything and read and I actually stopped halfway through and listened to another book. I did go back an finish but it was a struggle. I HATED the changing POV BUT, I totally hear the way to do the book is in audio so you can at least TELL when the POV changes by the changing voice. I hear people that read had to skim ahead to find out who was POV, then back tract. The fractured storyline was more confusing than engaging. It should have been released as 3 novellas or short stories. The saving grace was Luck Daniels who is outstanding, as always. I don't know if this is a book you can skip cause it does further the characterization but it's not enjoyable. I don't know if I will continue the series if he keeps up this form.
This is the best Dresdan File since Turn Coat, IMO. Don't get me wrong, all the series has been great but after Turn Coat the series had gotten so dark is was no fun to re-listen. I just didn't want to deal with that much pain again. This one we finally start to see Harry getting something back. As always, he's over-faced and beat to crap but the cost is better balanced. I wanted to re-listen as soon as I finished.
James Marsters is always, wonderful.
I enjoy Historical Romance. I like the description of the story line of this book fine but it ended up taking forever for me to finish it. I stopped several times. I got it on sale or I would have returned it. For me it's not worth a credit. I don't mind sex scenes but there needs to be more to the plot than that for me to enjoy a book. This really felt like a very obvious, thin plot line as an excuse to stitched the getting to the sex part, then once they got there, it seemed like that was pretty much the whole point. Very disappointing.
This series is good but certain elements are getting old. I would like Charlie's snark to mature just a bit. The constant off topic tangent banter is getting old. Especially as the story line gets more complicated and dark. At first it was an entertaining break, now it's just pulling me away from the plot. And please, for goodness sake, can she stop naming everything. Having her boobs named Danger and Will Robinson was cute at first, but having their reaction to her having sex is just disturbing.
I actually like the plot and most of the writing. Lorelei King does an OK job. As always, her voices are limited to you still have flashes of her characters from other books breaking thru.
I generally really like Eloisa James stories but both the leads in this one were very frustrating. Annabel is really not very likable. Even tho she grows up poor and plans to marry a rich man, it doesn't excuse her whiny and self pitying attitude in most of the book. I didn't mind the male lead, Ewan, that much till they get to Scotland and he pulls a trick on her to test her. Then he became a jerk too. Eloisa James is usually witty and fun. This story is just old tired tropes not very well handled.
Susan Duerdan was ok. She perhaps whispered too much but she did her best with what she had to work with.
The story has some problems but the main issue is Laural Merlington. She absolutely can NOT do these accents. And please, please STOP voicing the laugh! It is VERY irritating, it not only pulls me out of the story, I cringe every time I hear "he/she chuckled/laughed" cause I know that horrible "heh, heh, heh" laugh sound will follow. I have managed to listen to Merlington before. She does the laugh on Kelley Armstrong's Otherworld series also. The *laugh* combined with the HORRIBLE accents make this a very unpleasant listen.
I really liked The Madness of Ian MacKenzie a lot. The rest of the series has gone down a bit each book. I have read some, I've listened to some. I was really looking forward to Daniel's book and I liked the set up. But somehow it missed the potential. Daniel has always been able to get what he's wanted in the past books off his charm. In this book he sort of runs over everyone and no one gets angry cause of his charm. As far as the Violet, I really dislike stories that feature her particular form of damage.
Now for the biggest problem. What is going on with Angela Dawe? Her limited voices and odd cadence haven't bothered me AS bad in other books. I didn't notice it at all in Madness of Ian. In this book, especially the first file, you can count to 2 between every sentence, sometime 3. It's like she's being presented ONE sentence at a time on a dragging monitor. The pause is frustrating and very distracting. She has a habit of framing each sentence strongly anyway, but the gap between was far too long.
I loved Kelley Armstrong's adult Otherworld but not as much her YA work. This is definitely in line with the Adult Otherworld. Great story, very engaging. easy to follow. My only issue is I see no reason to have the two female readers. I found that distracting. Still, even with that, well worth the credit and I can't wait for the next book. It does leave quite a lot of threads untied.
