Gail Carriger’s best-selling Parasol Protectorate series reimagines Victorian England with vampires, werewolves, and a dash of steampunk. Blameless is the third in the series starring the parasol-wielding Lady Alexia Maccon, formerly Alexia Tarabotti. After news spreads of her delicate condition—a surprise to everyone since she’s married to a werewolf—Alexia is desperate to escape the London gossip. So she heads to Italy for a change of scenery.

As always, I am in love with this series and with the narrator. However, this book had an unfortunate proclivity for pauses. I am not sure why the pauses were not edited out, but they became annoying very quickly. It seemed there was a 15 second pause after every paragraph that left you feeling like the chapter had ended. I do hope these pauses will not continue in the next recorded book. I feel like they added several hours to the book just be leaving in the pauses. Of course, that may have been their goal?

According to Amazon this is actually book 7; that explains all of the confusing details the story assumed we knew about other characters and past plots. Thanks for letting us know Audible.

On a different note, it is very hard to take this book seriously due to the narrator. I would highly suggest you find this book at your local library or get it on your tablet. The story is great and captures you quickly enough, but the narrator ruins the story by gasping, like she's acting out the future sex scenes, at the end of every sentence!! I kid you not, she speaks one sentence and gasps for air. I couldn't decide if the narrator had COPD or if she was an out of work porn star who was narrating a book for the first time. I know it can't be easy to read an entire book out-loud, but one assumes that the audio company will delete breathy parts of a recording or use a narrator well practiced at hiding their breathing.

So, for those of you interested in this plot, I highly encourage you to read the story instead of listening to it. Save your credit or money; unless of course you don't mind the gasping ;-)

The first two books in this series were excellent and well worth the credits. Do yourself a favor and stop listening after book two. In this book we listen to Atticus make stupid mistake after stupid mistake. He kills needlessly, shows no remorse, and there is a tenth of the humor and funny antics you find in the first two books. I found myself hoping the book would end hours before it should. It became far too awkward and depressing. I started rooting for the "bad guys", a.k.a the Norse, and actually went out of my way to avoid listening to the book when the occasion arose. I'm truly disappointed in this book and wish this series had gone in a different direction. It had such potential.

At first I did not believe I would like the story, you may feel that way too, but give it a chance. It quickly becomes addicting and leaves you smiling. I look forward to the second book and even look forward to hearing the author reading it. The author is the narrator and I'm still not convinced that was smart on his side. At first it sounded as if the narrator was speaking too far from the microphone or that the sound quality was off, but I learned to ignore this and enjoy the book. I hope you will too.

Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

This entire book had me laughing, gasping in shock, and shaking me head at the main characters antics. I love her and want to be her! If parasols were something that were still around I would purchase one just to emulate the amazing things she does with hers. Watch out for this firecracker of a story because it will having you on the edge of your seat so many times it's almost unbearable. The heroine is witty, charming, funny, and full of life. I cannot wait to hear the rest of the series.
