Presumed Innocent brings to life our worst nightmare: that of an ordinary citizen facing conviction for the most terrible of crimes. Prosecutor Rusty Sabich is transformed from accuser to accused when he is handed an explosive case - that of the brutal murder of a woman who happens to be his former lover.

I re-read this in preparation to read his new sequel. Read it last when it first came out - totally forgot that this man can really write. Even knowing the ending, I was absolutely riveted. He turns a beautiful phrase and really has characters you feel you know. Wonderful narration too. You won't be disappointed.

In the midst of the Go-Go '90s, the culture of greed infused the MIT campus. A small blackjack club sprang up, dedicated to counting cards and beating the house at major casinos around the country. The Club grew slowly at first, but by the late 1990s, the right people had come up with the right system to take some of the world's most sophisticated casinos for all they were worth.

Julie says: "Good Book.. HORRIBLE Narrator"
    "the narrator is fine"
    Overall

I've listened to at least 100 audiobooks, and I'm not sure what the issue people have with the narrator. Take the plunge if the topic interests you and you listen a lot - I don't think the narrator is what people didn't like about the book.

After a successful L.A. television career, Ray Mitchell returns to the New Jersey housing project where he grew up, to rethink his life, reconnect with his teenage daughter, and give back to the community. Things are looking up: he's seeing a woman from the old neighborhood and teaching at his high school. But suddenly, he is found savagely beaten. He knows who did it, but won't talk. It's up to Nerese Ammons, a childhood acquaintance and now a police detective, to get Ray to tell what happened.

    "another fix for Wire fans"
    Overall

As noted in a review for Lush Life, Wire fans will recognize themes and richly drawn, nuanced characters (even names are recycled - Omar, Butchie) from the two novels available on audible.com. Both are narrated beautifully, and I thought Samaritan was even better than Lush Life.

Thirty years ago two sisters disappeared from a shopping mall. Their bodies were never found, and those familiar with the case have always been tortured by these questions: How do you kidnap two girls? Who or what could have lured the two sisters away from a busy mall on a Saturday afternoon without leaving behind a single clue or witness? Now a clearly disoriented woman involved in a rush-hour hit-and-run claims to be the younger of the long-gone Bethany sisters.

    "Worth it indeed!"
    Overall

I thought this was an exceptionally good audiobook. Great, fascinating plot that grips you, fascinating characters, excellent narration. Yes, you should be prepared to go back and forth in time, as you can tell from the book description, but it always marks a time change with a new chapter and/or music that breaks it up, and I did not find it difficult to follow at all. Very highly recommended.

It's not the dead that seem strange to Quirke. It's the living. One night, after a few drinks at an office party, Quirke shuffles down into the morgue where he works and finds his brother-in-law, Malachy, altering a file he has no business even reading. Odd enough in itself to find Malachy there, but the next morning, when the haze has lifted, it looks an awful lot like his brother-in-law, the esteemed doctor, was in fact tampering with a corpse, and concealing the cause of death.

This book showed up on so many best-of-2006 lists. It's unlike anything you've read, perhaps a bit of a thinking woman's Silence of the Lambs? Creepy but astonishingly smart and beautifully written and very compelling. Can't wait for her next book.

Honey Santana, impassioned, willful, possibly bipolar, self-proclaimed "queen of lost causes", has a scheme to help rid the world of irresponsibility, indifference, and dinnertime sales calls. She's taking rude, gullible Relentless, Inc., telemarketer Boyd Shreave and his less-than-enthusiastic mistress, Eugenie, into the wilderness of Florida's Ten Thousand Islands for a gentle lesson in civility. What she doesn't know is that she's being followed by her Honey-obsessed former employer.

I'm baffled by the negative reviews. This is classic 4 to 5 stars Hiaasen read by an excellent narrator. I couldn't get off the treadmill because I didn't want to turn off my ipod. Perhaps it's not his best, but even on a bad day, Hiaasen is in his own category. I predict you'll like it.

New York Times best-selling author Sarah Waters received sweeping critical acclaim for her debut, Tipping the Velvet, and has been a finalist for the Orange and Booker Prizes. In The Night Watch she tells the riveting, intersecting tales of four Londoners during and after World War II. As these four people survive the devastation of war and experience the dizzying heights of life, their paths cross in ways none of them can foresee.

    "may not work in audio"
    Overall

I was disappointed. The writing is lovely, and the ways in which the characters come together and overlap is clever and poignant. However, the structure of pulling a million threads together works better when the reader can physically flip back in a book and remind herself who is who and what is what. Also, the editing was simply awful, as major scene shifts occurred without the narrator taking a breath. You went from character B finishing a sentence he was saying to character A, and without an visual or auditory warning, charcter C and D pick up instantly. VERY annoying. I liked it enough to want to read rather than listen to it.
