Booklist calls this powerful debut by Roberta Gately an “utterly engrossing read.” In the months after 9/11, Boston nurse Elsa Murphy volunteers to go to Afghanistan to work in a small clinic. Although her new surroundings take some adjusting to, Elsa soon finds friendship with a young Afghani woman and potential romance with a U.S. soldier. But Elsa’s newfound happiness is threatened when Taliban forces move in.

Would you consider the audio edition of Lipstick in Afghanistan to be better than the print version?

I don't know bc I've not read the print version.

What did you like best about this story?

The continuum of voice/perspective of the main character's "coming of age."

Have you listened to any of Mozhan Marno’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't know whether or not I have.

Who was the most memorable character of Lipstick in Afghanistan and why?

    Protagonist bc she experienced change.

  • The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor

At 6:00 a.m. on the morning of October 3, 2009, Combat Outpost Keating was viciously attacked by Taliban insurgents. The 53 U.S. troops, having been stationed at the bottom of three steep mountains, were severely outmanned by nearly 400 Taliban fighters. Though the Americans ultimately prevailed, their casualties made it one of the war's deadliest battles for U.S. forces. And after more than three years in that dangerous and vulnerable valley a mere 14 miles from the Pakistan border, the U.S. abandoned and bombed the camp.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, but difficult. This is a book which needs much cross-referencing to fully understand location and military lingo.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

    The truthfulness of it.

What three words best describe Rob Shapiro’s performance?

    Exacting. Concise. Emotionless.

Was The Outpost worth the listening time?

Yes. However, due to the cross-referencing necessary for a full understanding, this book would be more comprehensible if read from the written form, with a map and index of terms readily available.

    Any additional comments?

    None.

Would you try another book from Muriel Barbery and/or Barbara Rosenblat and Cassandra Morris ?

    No

Has Elegance of the Hedgehog turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Barbara Rosenblat and Cassandra Morris ?

Readers were fine. Story, plot, and character development were sorely lacking.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Elegance of the Hedgehog?

The entire first book. Nothing consequential happened until the last couple chapters.

    Any additional comments?

Lacking protagonists and scenarios which incited change in main characters. No significant change in setting. Plot was drawn out for no apparent reason.
