  • The Alchemy of Air: A Jewish Genius, a Doomed Tycoon, and the Scientific Discovery That Fed the World but Fueled the Rise of Hitler

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 47 mins)
    • By Thomas Hager
    • Narrated By Adam Verner

At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity was facing global disaster. Mass starvation, long predicted for the fast-growing population, was about to become a reality. A call went out to the worlds scientists to find a solution. This is the story of the two enormously gifted, fatally flawed men who found it: the brilliant, self-important Fritz Haber and the reclusive, alcoholic Carl Bosch. Together they discovered a way to make bread out of air, built city-sized factories, controlled world markets, and saved millions of lives.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book should be required reading/listening in schools in my opinion. It explains how we got to where we are today in terms of World population growth and it also explains how the two world wars went on for the length of time they did.

I really enjoyed this book both from the science content and from the detailed descriptions of the key people involved in this discovery. I wish there were more books like this availabe

  • Those in Peril

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By Wilbur Smith
    • Narrated By Rupert Degas

Hazel Bannock is the heir to the Bannock Oil Corp, one of the major oil producers with global reach. While cruising in the Indian Ocean, Hazel's private yacht is hijacked by African pirates. Hazel is not on board at the time, but her nineteen year old daughter, Cayla, is kidnapped and held to ransom. The pirates demand a crippling twenty billion dollar ransom for her release. Complicated political and diplomatic considerations render the civilized major powers incapable of intervening.

    "Truly Awful !!"

I have read prett much everything published by Wilbur Smith and this has to be the worst novel in recent times. Weak plot and bordering on Obscene in parts. Avoid at all costs and save your download credits. Mr. Smith needs to retire or get a refresher course on the basic ingredients of a good novel.

  • Bell Labs: Life in the Crown Jewel

    • UNABRIDGED (7 hrs and 17 mins)
    • By Narain Gehani
    • Narrated By Stow Lovejoy
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Narain Gehani tells the fascinating story of the transition Bell Labs is undergoing as it adapts to new business conditions. Bell Labs researchers, who once were free to focus on innovation, research excellence, and prizes, now have to worry about business relevance. The culture of lifetime employment is gone and the pendulum has swung from basic to applied research.

Greg says: "Boring couldnt finish listening"
    "Repetitive and boring"

I gave up on this after a couple of hours and the 50th time he reminds us that Bell labs researchers did not like to work with the 'business units' - As a 'researcher' with direct experience in C and UNIX he has a story to tell , unfortunately this is not it . Don't waste your Credit on this.
