Yes, the story really keeps your interest. I was pleased that the usual rules of behavior were bent for the main characters.
The story built well until it droppped you off the cliff at the end
I find it very frustrating when an author pulls a Soprano-like ending. I don't want to use my imagination as to what happened. If I wanted to write my own end, I would be an author. I'm not; finish your book!
This is another great Banks novel. Someone else mentioned the weird music. I agree - it's jarring and unnecessary. Doesn't belong at all. What were they thinking?
Somehow I didn't realize that this was going to be a dime romance novel. There is some witty dialog, but overall, it's predictable and unmemorable.
I read the reviews before I downloaded this and, because they were mixed, hoped for the best. Truth is, I'm surprised I got through it, but was working on a project so didn't have time to look for something else. For me, it never got going. Overall, it was just mildly sad and substantially uninteresting . . . . .
I loved this book. Just downloading the second book now. . . it's not often that I can hardly wait to continue a story. The characters are mostly very engaging. The narration, particularly for Binnie and Alf is really outstanding. They all became a little part of my life for the few days they were with me. Can't be sure how accurate the description of what life was like during the blitz is, but it sure is believable and feels real. It's as if it brings the reader on a little trip in time with the characters. I recommend this one. It's interesting that these feel so different than the first two books, like they were written by someone else. The first book, although good, was gloomy. The second (To Say Nothing of the Dog) was downright silly. This is the best as far as I'm concerned.
I read the first book and like it ok . . . .the self-destructive behavior of lead male character did get a bit old, but overall, that one was pretty good. After reading the glowing reviews for this book, I was encouraged, but I found I just couldn't listen to it. I lasted about an hour, but it was just too cheesy. The narrator was very annoying too - it all seems very forced.
I liked this book the best so far - lots of twists and turns, for the most part, really fun.
There was a pretty good story here, but endless, needless, sex scenes that didn't further the story. If I wanted to read porn, I would order it. I'm not bashful of sex scenes in books, but once they started (in the second half), it seems that was all there was! To the point where it really detracted from the story.
Narrator was not the problem
This was odd and just couldn't capture my attention. I guess there were some clever ideas, but they were poorly executed. I didn't find myself caring about the characters at all (which is not like me). There's just something missing.
I couldn't even finish this. Read the other reviews so really thought I'd like this. I'm a big fan of this period and setting, but this was just empty. Not sure if it was the narrator or the story. I can't recommend this one.
