Victorian romance mixes seamlessly with elegant prose and biting wit—and werewolves—in Gail Carriger’s delightful debut novel. Soulless introduces Alexia Tarabotti, a parasol-wielding Londoner getting dangerously close to spinster status. But there are more important things than finding a husband. For Alexia was born without a soul, giving her the ability to render any vampire or werewolf completely powerless.

I was a little burned out on crime novels and ran across this one. It is a treasure. I found myself laughing out loud as I drove to work and could not wait to start it up on the way home. Romance, Love, Wherewolfs, Vampires and all during Queen Victoria's time. The whole story takes the mythology to a new and very pleasant level. Enjoy the listen

History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

What did you love best about The Winter Sea?

The characters, the performance, the historical context, the love stories.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Winter Sea?

The most memorable would ruin the ending, but lets just say it was one of the best endings ever.

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The scottish borough, the language of the elders, these were brought to life by her interpretation.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both, quick witted, sentimental, loving, sincere.

    Any additional comments?

I am not inclined to recommend many books because I like them. I have been told that I have a fondness for books that would be read by males, but this one is by far one of the best yet. It even got me going again on the Outlander series.

A riveting true crime story that vividly recounts the birth of modern forensics. At the end of the nineteenth century, serial murderer Joseph Vacher, known and feared as “The Killer of Little Shepherds,” terrorized the French countryside. He eluded authorities for years - until he ran up against prosecutor Emile Fourquet and Dr. Alexandre Lacassagne, the era’s most renowned criminologist.

What would have made The Killer of Little Shepherds better?

You have to be very interested in the concepts of Forensic Science and want to understand where it comes from and the forerunners of this way of looking at criminals and their behavior. I am glad to know the names of the individuals who began this field and why.

Would you ever listen to anything by Douglas Starr again?

    Yes

How could the performance have been better?

    Not quite so dry.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I would like to see one of the CSI shows mention it's beginnings which are set out in this story.

    Any additional comments?

I liked the book, but I am very interested in the history of the forensic science utilized in criminology.
