The power and the beauty of The Iliad resound again across 2,700 years in Stephen Mitchell's exciting new translation, as if the lifeblood of its heroes Achilles and Patroclus, Hector and Priam flowed in every word. And we are there with them amid the horror and ecstasy of war, carried along by a poetry that lifts even the most devastating human events into the realm of the beautiful.

Darwin8u says: "Mitchell's Translation is Brilliant Poetry"
"Returning to the classics: this was a great choice"

What made the experience of listening to The Iliad the most enjoyable?

The music in the wording was enjoyable. As soon as I finished, I had to go immediately to the Odyssey.

What did you like best about this story?

I learned what Homer said and not what Hollywood’s distortions

Which character – as performed by Alfred Molina – was your favorite?

    Achilles

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was exhilarating and heightened my imagination. I’m eager to find additional classics from the period.

    Any additional comments?

It is kind of fun to revisit all the books I should have read in school.

In this magnificent biography, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of American Lion and Franklin and Winston brings vividly to life an extraordinary man and his remarkable times. Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power gives us Jefferson the politician and president, a great and complex human being forever engaged in the wars of his era. Philosophers think; politicians maneuver. Jefferson’s genius was that he was both and could do both, often simultaneously. Such is the art of power.

Would you listen to Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power again? Why?

Down the road yes. There is still a lot of period books I need to read first.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Although I got a much better understanding of the man, the view of our emerging notion was not as clear as "Washington: A Life".

  • Year Zero: A Novel

    Story
    (571)

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it's a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. And boy, do they have news. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on humanity's music ever since "Year Zero" (1977 to us), when American pop songs first reached alien ears. This addiction has driven a vast intergalactic society to commit the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang.

Robert says: "Fantastic Performance by Hodgman"
"A lot of fun, up ther with Hitchikers Guide..."

Is there anything you would change about this book?

No, it is what it is. An intriguing story, with inventive twists and turns.

Would you recommend Year Zero to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, it is fun and a pleasant change to some of the heavy hitters I have heard recently.

Have you listened to any of John Hodgman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I have seen enjoyed him on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Articles in Wired and The New York Times Magazine.

Could you see Year Zero being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Movie yes, a TV series would stretch the thin plot, but the characters are interesting.

    Any additional comments?

Glad I took it on, it helped sooth the long commute.

In the 10 years since his classic Kitchen Confidential first alerted us to the idiosyncrasies and lurking perils of eating out, much has changed for the subculture of chefs and cooks, for the restaurant business and for Anthony Bourdain. Medium Raw explores those changes, tracking Bourdain's strange and unexpected voyage from journeyman cook to globe-traveling professional eater and drinker, and even to fatherhood. Bourdain takes no prisoners as he dissects what he's seen.

Andy says: "entertaining but not as good as kitchen conf."

Where does Medium Raw rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Number two

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Just a content and approach issue. Some sections were memorable, but some were more suited to fast forward. Kitchen Confidential was more enjoyable.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

It is intersting to have the narrator the author.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A good chuckle here and there. Must reactions we Aha. that makes sense!

    Any additional comments?

It did provided incite into the industry and removed any idea I might have had about going into the business. His Take on the food networks and celebrity chefs was eye opening.
